[0:00] Mark 14, I'll begin reading at verse 12. On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,! Jesus' disciples asked him, Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?
[0:25] So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
[0:36] Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, The teacher asks, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
[0:48] He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there. The disciples left, went into the city, and found things just as Jesus had told them.
[1:08] So they prepared the Passover. When evening came, Jesus arrived with the twelve. While they were reclining at the table, eating, he said, I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.
[1:29] They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, Surely not I? It is one of the twelve, he replied, one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
[1:44] The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man. It would be better for him if he had not been born.
[2:00] While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, take it, this is my body.
[2:15] Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and offered it to them, and they all drank from it. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many, he said to them.
[2:30] I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.
[2:44] When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. We continue our studies in Mark's account of the gospel.
[2:58] It's now Thursday of Passion Week. The next morning, Jesus will be condemned and hanging on a cross to die. He's down to the final precious hours that he has with his disciples before his death.
[3:15] And he has crucial things to reveal to them, to prepare them for the coming shock. Because though he has spoken often in recent days of his impending death and resurrection, they've not understood what he meant by that.
[3:34] And they were afraid to ask him. To them, it was impossible that Messiah could actually be murdered. So in our text this morning, we have three things happening.
[3:46] And each of them have attending lessons for us as well as for the disciples. First the Passover, then the betrayer, and then the Lord's Supper. We start with the Passover kept, verses 12 to 16.
[4:00] We read in verse 12, Now we've already seen the significance of the timing of Jesus' death, that it happened during the Passover feast.
[4:24] You remember how the chief priests and the scribes, for them, as they plotted some sly way to arrest and kill him, for them, any time but the Passover was a good time to arrest and kill him.
[4:39] They said, But not during the Passover, or the people may riot. Yet God's plan was for Jesus to die during the Passover week, so that the death of his son might be seen by many witnesses, and that the meaning of his dying and his death might be clearly seen from the Passover, and all that that symbolized.
[5:08] So the meaning of his death, that God the Son dies in the place of sinners to take away God's wrath, that it might pass over them.
[5:19] So there's the challenge. We see God's sovereign plan always trumps man's contrary plans. His enemies eventually came around to doing exactly what God had planned from all eternity.
[5:36] Our Lord Jesus had come annually to Jerusalem in obedience to the law of God. He had come each year to eat the Passover lamb, but this year he would not only come and eat the Passover lamb, he has come to be the Passover lamb.
[5:52] The lamb slain for sinners like you and me. Because in shedding his blood, God would see that blood and pass over all of his people, all those who are trusting in him, all because Christ, their Passover lamb, was sacrificed in their place.
[6:12] So we've seen that significance of Jesus, the timing of his death during Passover. Today we'll see the place where they were to eat the Passover together.
[6:24] And the disciples asked, where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover? It's interesting how Jesus gives the directions. It's not like you get them on your phone.
[6:35] He describes the location in a roundabout way without naming the house's owner or his address. But the directions are so clear that they will not be able to miss it.
[6:50] And they didn't. So verse 13 and following. So he sent two of his disciples, and Luke tells us it was Peter and John, telling them, go into the city, that is Jerusalem, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
[7:06] Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, the teacher asks, where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples? He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready.
[7:18] Make preparations for us there. Kids, this is quite a lengthy treasure hunt with a lot of different clues along the way to lead them to the place.
[7:29] Verse 16 says, the disciples, that is the two of them, left, went into the city, and found things just as Jesus had told them.
[7:42] And so they prepared the Passover. Now this should remind you of something that happened back in chapter 11, just four days earlier. Palm Sunday, Jesus is going to enter into Jerusalem.
[7:59] And he's going to ride on the colt of a donkey. And so he sends two of his disciples saying, go to the village ahead of you. And just as you enter it, you'll find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.
[8:14] Untie it and bring it here. And if anyone asks you, why are you doing this? Tell him the Lord needs it. And we'll send it back here shortly. And Luke comments, those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.
[8:30] Interesting. Two similar events within four days. What is Jesus doing? What's the lesson he's teaching?
[8:43] Well, he's stooping in love to strengthen the faith of his disciples, their faith in what he has told them. Not just his words about a donkey and the place to eat the Passover, but about everything that he had told them and that he is about to tell them in the hours ahead.
[9:05] Just a couple weeks earlier in chapter 10, they were on their way up to Jerusalem. This is before they got there. And Jesus was leading the way, and the disciples were astonished while those who followed were afraid.
[9:19] And again, he took the 12 aside and he told them what was going to happen to him. We're going up to Jerusalem and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priest and the teachers of the law.
[9:30] They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later, he will rise.
[9:44] Well, now, just in a matter of hours, these very things are going to happen to their Messiah and Lord just as Jesus had told them.
[9:55] And so he's preparing them for that which they are not prepared for, that is their Messiah being killed. He doesn't want that to shatter their faith. I know you'll be surprised, he says, but I'm not surprised.
[10:10] I'm not some unknowing victim of the circumstance. I know exactly what's going to happen to me here in Jerusalem. In fact, it's the very reason I came into this world to finish the work that the Father has given me to do, to die in the place of my people, to bear his curse and wrath that my people deserve, that God's wrath might pass over them.
[10:38] So Jesus' repeated knowledge of the future is being put on display to his disciples, that they might know when they see their Savior betrayed, arrested, beaten, whipped, nailed to a cross, that they will know this is not some surprise.
[11:00] This is exactly what Jesus said would happen. And indeed, that would strengthen their faith. And remembered later, that's what happened. As they remembered these words of Jesus, it would confirm their faith.
[11:15] After they had been shaken for three days, they would find that it all happened just like Jesus said it would. Even the rising three days later.
[11:27] So this lesson is not just for them, but it's recorded for us as well on the pages of Scripture to strengthen our faith in what Jesus has said.
[11:38] All that he has said. That you might live with confidence that a day is coming when you will see everything happening just as Jesus said it would.
[11:50] So that means, dear brothers and sisters, the day is coming when you will find every promise in the book fulfilled. A day is coming when you will see everything working together for your good.
[12:05] Even those evil things that have been done will be made to serve God's eternal good purpose. And you will find that his grace really is sufficient for you in all your trials.
[12:19] You will live to see that. And you will live to hear the trumpet blow and to see the heavens open and your Lord returning for you. And you will be caught up together with the other saints in the clouds to meet him in the air.
[12:34] And so you will ever be with the Lord. You will see it happen just as Jesus said it would. And you'll find yourself on the day of judgment on the right hand of Jesus. Just as he said.
[12:45] And he will say to you then what he told you he was going to say. Come you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. And then you will go away to eternal life.
[13:00] And you will experience the end of death and sin and tears and pain and sorrow. Gladness will overtake you and sorrow and sighing will flee away. It will all happen just as Jesus said it would.
[13:14] And my unconverted friend, if you die without repenting of your sin and without casting the whole weight of your soul on Jesus, the only Savior, you too will find one day that it will all happen just as Jesus said it would.
[13:29] Be sure your sins will find you out. They will find you out. Do not be deceived. God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
[13:40] You will see it all happen. Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. And you will find yourself on the left hand of Jesus in that day.
[13:53] You will not hear from him, come you who are blessed by my Father, but you will hear him say, depart from me. Depart from me, you who are cursed. Into the eternal fire prepares for the devil and his angels.
[14:06] And then you will go away to eternal punishment while the righteous go away to eternal life. It will all happen just as Jesus said it would. But and you will know that it's all your fault that you're in hell instead of in heaven.
[14:24] But why? Why when there is yet time to repent and to cast your soul on Christ to cry out to him, God be merciful to me, a sinner for Jesus' sake because of what he's done.
[14:38] Oh, you cry that out from your heart. And you will find it is just as he said it were. That whoever comes to him, he will in no way cast you out.
[14:55] Yes, he will receive. Such is his promise. Such is his word. And you'll see it's true. So that's the first point on the Passover kept. The place predicted. The supernatural knowledge of Jesus about what will happen.
[15:13] And the lesson learned that every one of us will find everything to happen just as Jesus is told. That ought to make you want to know everything that he said.
[15:26] To want to know this book. We ought to be known as a people of the book because we believe that it's all going to happen just as he said it would. And not only to know it, but then to align our lives with it.
[15:42] To believe everything it says and to align our lives with all that he has said. Oh, it ought to make us treasure this book. Trust, obey, expect to see it all happen.
[15:56] It's forever settled in heaven. It cannot fail. Well, that's the first point. The second is the betrayal then announced.
[16:07] The betrayal announced. Verses 16 and 17. When evening came, Jesus arrived with the twelve. And while they were reclining at the table eating, he said, I tell you the truth. Remember, kids, when you read those words, it's like Jesus is saying, I'm coming with something hard here.
[16:23] But it's true, so brace yourself and receive it. Jesus said to them, I tell you the truth. One of you will betray me.
[16:34] One who is eating with me. Now, there's no way they were ready to hear this. It landed like a bolt of lightning out of a blue sky. Sure, he had told them that he was going to be betrayed at Jerusalem.
[16:49] But now he says to the twelve, it's one of you. One of you who are eating with me. Well, they were saddened.
[17:02] I think that's to put it lightly. They were saddened. And we see what happened. One by one they said, surely not I.
[17:14] Surely not I. And Jesus doesn't tell them who. He just basically repeats the same thing. It's one of the twelve. And it's one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
[17:26] Both times Jesus refers to the betrayer as one who is eating with him. And oh, how that exaggerates the sin of betrayal. That it came from an intimate friend who shared familial, warm fellowship with him around the table.
[17:47] It seems that Jesus is here referring to what David experienced and expressed in Psalm 51, 9. Words that describe his pain over the betrayal that he experienced where David writes, even my close friend whom I trusted, he who shared my bread has lifted up his heel against me.
[18:08] John tells us that this happened, this betrayal by Judas. It happened to fulfill this scripture. He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.
[18:19] So, have you been betrayed? Have you been betrayed by a husband? by a wife? By a parent? By a son? By a son? A daughter? One who you thought was a close friend?
[18:34] Jesus, too. Understand. He, too, has been betrayed by one close to him. He's felt the stain of betrayal.
[18:47] And don't think it didn't hurt Jesus. Don't think that, well, he's God, he can't be hurt. No, no, he's the God-man and he suffered and this was part of his suffering to be betrayed by one of his own.
[19:07] John actually tells us that when he made this announcement, he was troubled in spirit. it wasn't a casual thing. Well, of course, it's going to be Judas.
[19:19] No, no, it went to his heart. It was like a twist of a knife that it would be one of the twelve. He felt it deeply just like you do.
[19:31] So, he knows, as we just read in Hebrews 4, he knows exactly the mercy and grace that you need in your time of need. And he has that grace and he gives that grace to those who ask him.
[19:47] Well, then Jesus says in verse 21, the Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man. It would be better for him if he had not been born.
[20:01] Now, Jesus' betrayal and death had been written about him in the book, in the book of Scripture. I just referred to, it's John referred to, Psalm 41, 9.
[20:15] And, of course, there's Psalm 22 that's a description of the cross and Isaiah 50 and 53 and many, many other places. It's written in the book. And Jesus here says, the Son of Man will go just as it is written about him in the book.
[20:34] Now, that's true of the Bible. He will go just as it was written about him in the Bible, in its prophecies about the betrayal.
[20:47] So, that's true, but I think that it rather refers to the book of God's eternal decree. And I'll show you why. Because that, too, is spoken of, God's eternal decree, what he determined to happen before anything happened.
[21:05] That is referred to as a book or a scroll. You remember the Psalm 139, 16 where David says, all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
[21:20] So, God knows what is going to happen and how long I'm going to live because he's decreed it. He's determined it. And he's written it in his book. Kids, that means that your parents will not live one day longer or one day shorter than what's written in God's books.
[21:37] You better love them while you have them. And that means you children, you'll not live one day longer or one day shorter than what's written in the book. All the days ordained for you were written in his book before one of them came to be.
[21:51] And that was true of David. It's true of you. It's true of me. It's true of Messiah. Yeah. And we have his words as he was coming into the world, as the eternal son of God was coming into the world.
[22:09] This is what he said to his father written in Psalm 45 and also Hebrews 10. Sacrifice and offering, father. You did not desire but a body you have prepared for me.
[22:21] Burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. And then I said here am I. I have come. It is written about me in the scroll.
[22:32] I desire to do your will oh my God. Your law is within my heart. It's all there written in your scroll father.
[22:44] The scroll of your eternal decree that you're not just wanting another sacrifice of another animal. That's not why you sent me to make that kind of a sacrifice. No, you prepared a body for me.
[22:56] The eternal son of God who was without a body up to this point God prepared a body. Why? Just so that he might come and die in the place of his people and make that one sacrifice that would forever put away the sins of his people and blot them out forever.
[23:14] And though it was eternally decreed he willingly he voluntarily comes for he says here am I I have come it's written about me in the scroll yes but I desire to do your will.
[23:26] So yes God wrote it in his scroll from eternity past and when Jesus fulfills that he does it with all of his heart he came willing to lay down his life for his people.
[23:40] So there was nothing in the whole way of Christ's betrayal trial mistreatment torture and death that was not decreed by God. Nothing. It included the sins of Judas of the chief priest Pilate the crowd calling for his crucifixion the soldiers who nailed him to the cross everyone who mocked him that day all of it.
[24:01] The son of man will go just as it is written about him. There won't be anything that happens that God has not decreed.
[24:11] Do you think for a moment that God would leave the most important event to ever happen to chance?
[24:28] The death of his son and the place of sin the only way of salvation from hell for any sinner do you think God would just leave that to chance? He wouldn't plan it he wouldn't purpose it he wouldn't decree it he'd just we'll just see how it goes.
[24:46] You're studying the perseverance of the saints and the preservation of the saints in Sunday school you wouldn't have any confidence that you're going to make it if God just left things to chance about salvation about a savior needing to die in that place no it was purposed it was decreed it was written in the scroll everything happened just as Jesus said it would because everything happens just as God has decreed it to happen this is your God brothers and sisters he foils the plans of the nations and he thwarts the purposes of the people but the plans of the Lord stand firm forever the purposes of his heart through all generations Jesus was confident of that his plan his purpose to save his people by his substitutionary curse bearing death that was decreed written in his book from all eternity and yes it will happen exactly as he said it would and yet
[25:49] Jesus goes on to say in verse 21 but woe to that man who betrays the son of man it would be better for him if he had not been born so Christ's betrayal by Judas was sovereignly fixed decreed from eternity yet it removes nothing of Judas's responsibility and accountability for his wicked betrayal there's the two truths found in this verse God is sovereign over all that happens he decreed that Judas would betray him the son of man will go just as it has been written truth number two Judas is responsible for his sinful action he was not forced he was not coerced!
[26:35] He did freely what he did he did willingly he wanted it out of greed for silver out of hatred for Christ and therefore he is fully accountable for his sin and his action so here's an important lesson for the disciples for you and me God's sovereign decree never cancels man's responsibility or guilt and therefore Judas receives the due punishment for his sin woe to that man it would be better for him to have never been born you say but that's not fair God decreed it God says who are you to judge me who are you to judge me to judge my justice just because we don't understand how both of these statements can be true does not mean that one or the other is not true it just means you're not God it just means you're not the judge of
[27:36] God it just means that you and I must humbly bow and own that his thoughts and ways are far above our ways as the heavens are above the earth he has a way I know not how of bringing about his eternal decrees without being the author of sin without being the tempter to sin without forcing man to sin and yet in the end what happens in the world is exactly what God in his secret book of the truth Peter knew this and he preached it seven weeks later in the same city of Jerusalem Acts 2 22 and 23 this man Jesus he's talking to Jerusalem crowd that crucified the Savior this man Jesus of Nazareth was handed over to you by God set purpose God had a purpose God had a plan his set purpose and foreknowledge and you with the help of wicked men put him to death by nailing him to the cross the fact that it was that this was done all according to
[28:40] God's purpose and plan did not make them any less guilty for their wicked deed as they are charged for it Peter Peter goes on to say but God raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand so let all Israel know and be assured of this God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Messiah and when the people heard this they were cut to the heart and they didn't say that's not fair it was decreed that he would die!
[29:14] no! they cried what shall we do they saw how guilty they were for their sin of crucifying the Savior though that had been planned from eternity past and they cried what shall we do and the answer was repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of your sin 3,000 found mercy in Jesus Christ that day don't miss the mercy of God to Messiah murdering sinners Acts 4 just a few chapters later Peter and John have just been released from prison they go back to the church where there's a prayer meeting and this is the prayer of the church Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed they did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen oh if there's if there's no other verse in the Bible you need that one they did that is the
[30:29] Gentiles and Jews that crucified him they did nothing but what your power your your strength your power will had decided beforehand should happen so sovereignty of God responsibility we must embrace both of them as they're revealed in scripture you're going to have to cut a lot of verses out of the Bible you see faith is able to swim where reason can no longer wade I can't explain to you how both of those things are true I can tell you that both of them are true on the authority of dozens of verses in scripture and so by faith I can swim and I can glorify God for the truth of it and worship him even when my mind is over its head and can't understand it and notice in passing the punishment of
[31:29] Judas is not annihilation because according to Jesus it would have been better for Judas never to have been born than to have died with his sins unforgiven you see annihilation would have only taken him back to non existence but Jesus is saying what Judas and every unforgiven sinner will suffer is not that but far worse it would have been better to have never been born and to have been born to die with sin on your slate that's not been forgiven everlasting punishment according to Jesus and that too will happen just as Jesus said it would can I point out to you that when Jesus said that evening dropping this bomb on them one of you will betray me but the rest of the disciples did not all look at Judas and say how could you no not at all
[32:36] John actually tells us his disciples stared at one another at a loss to know which of them he met and even when Jesus said to Judas what you're about to do do quickly and Judas got up and left and went out into the night they did not suspect him as being the betrayer John goes on to say!
[32:58] no! one at the! understood why Jesus said this to them said this to him since Judas had charge of the money some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast the feast lasted seven days or maybe he told him to go and give something to the poor which was also one of the customs!
[33:18] during Passover to give money as they're feasting together to give something to the poor so Judas had been with them for three years he gave them no reason to suspect him at all 2nd Timothy 2 19 the Lord knows them that are his we often don't know for two days Judas has now had the 30 pieces of silver in his possession and now he's going to tell the chief priest where to find Jesus when a crowd is not present because he knows the place they often would go to in Gethsemane so why did Jesus tell them that one of them would betray him well again John answers that in his account chapter 13 verse 19 Jesus says I tell you this now before it happens so that when it happens you may believe that
[34:20] I am he you may believe I'm Messiah I'm the son of God that you professed me to be that shouldn't be shattered when you see one of you betray me again he wants them to know that he knows I know all about this there's no surprise to me this is the father's plan and I'm fulfilling it to the T perhaps also to let Judas know that I know what you're up to and that warning should have been enough to cause him to repent and return the 30 pieces of silver and to seek mercy with the Lord but instead he hardens it and goes to them and tells them where Jesus could be found well that's the betrayal revealed but lastly the Lord's supper instituted verses 22 to 25 while they were eating Jesus took bread gave thanks and broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this it is my body and he took the cup and gave thanks and offered it to them and they all drank from it this is my cup of the covenant which is poured!
[35:30] for many he I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God now we should be very familiar with these words that are used at the institution of the Lord's supper we repeat them every other month here as we remember our Lord's suffering and death Luke records them and records Jesus words saying do this!
[35:59] in remembrance of me do you do this will you be here next Sunday night to do this in remembrance of what Jesus has done for you and will you do it because you want to enjoy fellowship with him at a family meal well I want you to see how this Lord's supper meal is related to three other meals and then we're done first it's relation to the Passover meal should be very clear just by the timing of his death and the institute when does Jesus institute the Lord's supper right as they're eating the Passover together the two are related Passover look back to that day when God's wrath passed over the Israelite homes that had the blood of the lambs by faith put upon their doorpost and when God saw the blood he passed over them in the wrath and curse of death as it fell upon those without the blood covering them so
[37:10] Passover Passover looked back to that event but it also looked forward to the fulfillment of that type that shadow it looked forward to the reality and indeed during the Passover feast the Jews always looked forward to a future deliverance through God's intervention well the divine deliverer has come as 1 Corinthians 5 7 clearly says Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed you see the Lord's supper has a direct link with Passover because Christ is called our Passover lamb and he's been sacrificed not to save us from some political bondage from Egypt or Rome but to save us from our sins and its punishment so the fact that it's been fulfilled there's no need for any more bloody sacrifices of Passover lambs a new meal is therefore needed to replace the old one not another bloody sacrifice but a meal to remind us of the once for all shedding of Jesus blood that is sufficient to wash away the sins of all who trust him if there were a billion worlds with a billion sinners on every world there is enough value in this blood to save so this meal is a reminder of him whose body and blood was given for us to effectively take away the sins of his people brothers and sisters the wrath of
[38:41] God fell on him that it might pass over us and so the bread and cup of wine are symbols of his body and blood when he says this is my body this is my blood he's not saying like Rome says that the bread turns into his body or the cup turns into his blood these are just symbols he's saying he also said I am the door not at all meaning I'm a piece of wood he also said I'm the vine not at all meaning that I'm a plant in actuality he's just telling us bread you need it to live I'm the bread of life blood the life is in the blood you only have life and eternal life in me so the Lord's supper is related to the Passover meal reminding us that God's wrath passes over all who take shelter in Jesus blood miracle miracle!
[39:47] often established with blood and involved a meal shared between the parties. In the old covenant made at Mount Sinai in Exodus chapter 34, you can read about it there as that covenant was instituted with God's people Israel.
[40:03] Moses and the elders went up on the mountain and they received the book of the covenant and Moses comes and he reads it to the people and they say, we will do all that he has said. And then blood from the sacrifices was sprinkled on the altar to represent God and the other half of the blood was sprinkled on the people.
[40:26] And Moses said as he sprinkled the people, this is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words. And then it says Moses and the elders ate and drank.
[40:39] They met with the Lord. The covenant was established with blood and then celebrated in a covenant meal between God and his people represented by Moses and the elders.
[40:51] So when we come to this Lord's Supper, we can't help but see this language of covenant. This is a covenant meal. It too necessitates a new meal shared together with Christ and his people.
[41:04] And that's the Lord's Supper. It reminds us of his blood of the covenant that establishes the new covenant that had been told about in Jeremiah 20, 31 and Ezekiel 36 and other places.
[41:20] Jesus says this blood is the blood of the covenant, which is given for many. And so we're reminded then in the Lord's Supper that the blood of Jesus has brought about a new covenant for his people.
[41:39] And it guarantees the three promises of the new covenant. That God would put his law in our inward parts by regeneration. That all of us would have an intimate personal relationship with the Lord.
[41:53] We would all know the Lord. Everyone in the covenant. And then that our sins would be forgiven and remembered no more.
[42:03] We sang it. He'll forgive all your sins and remember them. Where'd that come? That's the promise of the new covenant. This is the blood of the new covenant. What I'm going to shed in a few hours on the cross will guarantee these promises for you.
[42:19] But then the Lord's Supper is not only related to the Passover meal, to the covenant meal. It's also related to a future meal in the finalized kingdom of God.
[42:31] Verse 25, I tell you the truth. I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day. That day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.
[42:43] Even at the first Lord's Supper. The initiating of this new supper. The Lord's Supper. Our Lord is putting them on notice. Pointing them ahead.
[42:54] That this supper is not going to go on forever. It will be replaced at the end of the age in the kingdom of God. So, Paul refers to the same when he's quoting Jesus' words in establishing the Lord's Supper.
[43:06] As he writes to the church at Corinth and says, This is my body. This is my blood. Do this in remembrance of me. Then Paul writes, For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
[43:21] Until he comes. I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God. And when he comes, this memorial meal of the Lord's Supper that the Lord willing will celebrate again next Sunday evening will be replaced with another meal.
[43:40] The wedding supper of the Lamb and his bride. Revelation 19. John hears a great multitude shouting, Hallelujah. For the Lord God almighty reign.
[43:52] Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory. For the wedding of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear, which stands for the righteous acts of the saints.
[44:05] And then the angel said to me, Write, Blessed, happy are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb. So can you see what Jesus is saying by relating the Lord's Supper to all three of these other meals?
[44:23] It's only through my body and blood given for you on the cross that the punishment of God's wrath and death for sin can be turned away, passed over you because it fell on me.
[44:35] It's only because of my body and blood given to you that the promises of the new covenant are guaranteed for you. It's only because of my body and blood that your reservation at the wedding supper of the Lamb and his bride is secured.
[44:52] It's only for those who have trusted in the Savior. All of this is yours. And in just a few hours, our Lord is going to be found, body and blood given for his people on the cross.
[45:13] And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. He's going to drink that bitter cup of wrath that we might drink the sweet cup of salvation both now and forevermore in a new heavens and new earth, the home of the righteous.
[45:33] Doesn't it make you want to sing a hymn? How about number 175? Hallelujah, what a Savior. What a Savior, what a salvation.
[45:46] Let's stand and sing it together. It's 175. 175. A Savior.
[45:56] Amen. Amen.
[46:56] Amen. Amen.
[47:56] Amen.
[48:24] and a new song. The same message, Hallelujah, what a Savior. Hear His words in John 6. This is the will, for I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but to do the will of Him who sent me.
[48:40] And this is the will of Him who sent me, that I should lose none of all that He has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise Him up at the last day.
[48:59] Amen.
