Jesus is the Center of the Big Kingdom

I am excited about this lesson because we're finally moving away from the little kingdom that we've spent a number of weeks on. We're finally moving away from the little kingdom and we're moving into the big kingdom.

And that means that we're going to be talking about something infinitely better than what we have been talking about. And I hope that will make you happy. That would encourage you. Today we're going to talk about Jesus because he is at the center of the big kingdom.

He is what the big kingdom is all about. But before we go in that direction, let's do a little bit of review to remind ourselves of where we've been.

And I hope that will make Jesus all the more precious when we go over the field of our own heart to find Jesus afterward. It will make him all the more sweet.

We've seen so far that the little kingdom is marked by selfishness. And that means that the little kingdom is basically the bottom line. The little kingdom is about self.

And a lot of times as Christians that means that the little kingdom dresses up. And it's the costume kingdom. It pretends to be the kingdom of God.

But all the while it is self-motivated religion. A self-motivated life. And because our kingdom as Christians can so easily dress up in the garb of the big kingdom, it can be very difficult to know what kingdom we're living for.

And we gave three reasons last week. Or three ways that we can tell if we're really living for the big kingdom. Or if, in fact, we are really living for the little kingdom.

Do you remember those three ways or three marks of the costume kingdom? When you're living for the little kingdom, but you're pretending like you're living for the big kingdom.

Three reasons or three ways to tell that. Lack of enthusiasm for the things of the Lord. Very good. We said that the costume kingdom is marked by a lack of enthusiasm specifically for the gospel.

The costume kingdom actually can be excited about the word of God and knowing things and doctrine and all sorts of things. But the gospel has lost its flavor.

And we're not enthusiastic about Jesus Christ and what he has done. Some other thing has come in and we're not excited about Jesus anymore. Do you remember the other two?

Either of them? Yes, Mike. Disappointed with God. Okay. And why would that be? Why would we become disappointed with God? Right. Because when we're serving our little kingdom in the guise of the big kingdom, we are basically using God.

And if God doesn't give me what I want, then I become disappointed with God. If I see Christianity and the church as a means to get something, a better relationship, a better marriage, better children, and that doesn't materialize, then I'm going to be disappointed with God because he is not giving me what I really want out of this deal.

And the third one we mentioned briefly was we start looking like our treasures. We start looking like earthbound treasures. So if we're really, really in love with material goods, we become more and more materialistic.

If we love comfort, then we become more and more lazy. It's where the fruit of your life actually comes out because by the fruit you'll know what a person is.

And if we look at ourselves and we see worldliness and materialism and laziness and all sorts of other sins, then we could tell that whatever we're saying, whatever we're pretending, the heart of the matter is not in us.

Well, that is the difference between the little kingdom and God's kingdom. The little kingdom itself is the center of the little kingdom.

In the middle of the little kingdom is you. And in the middle of the big kingdom, the central place is reserved for someone else.

It's someone other than you. And at the center of the big kingdom is Christ, the king. And there he is. And that's what we're going to talk about today.

Because Jesus Christ is really at the center of it all. He's at the center of the big kingdom. He's at the center of what God is doing. He is supposed to be the center of what your life is supposed to be about, whether you're lost or saved, young or old, man or woman.

Jesus Christ is supposed to be, and he should be, the center of it all. Well, the Bible is the story of this battle between these two kingdoms.

My kingdom, the little kingdom, self, and God's kingdom. And more than that, the Bible is the story of Jesus Christ the king and how he gains his place and how he puts all of his enemies under his feet.

And his story, Jesus Christ's story, starts at the very beginning with Adam and Eve. And you remember, in the middle of cursing Adam and Eve and the serpent, a promise came.

And the promise came that the seed of the woman will crush the head of the serpent. So there's the seed.

There's this man. And he is going to come and he's going to crush Satan and his kingdom. And so right from the very beginning of everything, from the minute we fell into sin, there comes this promise that a king is coming.

Someone else is coming to save his people and to crush Satan and all of selfishness down. So Eve has a son.

And do you remember what she said? Behold, I've begotten a man. Probably what she was thinking, I've gained the man. I have the seed here.

And it turns out that Cain wasn't the promised one, was he? Cain is not the long-expected rescuer. Well, generation follows generation and one generation follows another.

And Lamech was the seventh from Adam. And he has a son. And he names his son Noah. Do you remember what Noah means?

It means comfort or rest. Comfort. Lamech is saying, maybe Noah will be the one to give us comfort from all this toil and all this trouble that we've seen.

And we know that Noah didn't bring comfort to this creation. The flood came in his time. And generation comes and another generation goes.

And there's still no seed. And Abraham is promised a seed. And Sarah gives birth to Isaac. But Isaac isn't the one that we're looking for.

He's not going to crush Satan's head. And Isaac has Jacob. And Jacob has many children. And the seed is still not there.

He's still waiting to come forth. And so years and years pass. And in the time of the judges, something happens. The whole book of Judges is crying out, we need a king.

We need a king. And because everyone's doing what they want. And there's chaos. Sin is ruling. The little kingdoms are ruling here. We need a king. And so Saul is made king.

And he fails. And David is made king. And he fails in many ways. And he dies. And Solomon. He's made king.

And he fails. And king follows king. And it's royal failure after royal failure. It's death after death. And there's still no seed.

And so the whole Old Testament is pointing forward. And it's saying, it's marking this longing that we have for a king.

For this promised seed. For someone to rescue us from Satan's kingdom. For someone to rule forever. For someone to bring us rest.

And we need this forever king. So on every page, it's pointing us forward to someone. To someone who can rule over us.

Well, John the Baptist comes. You remember. And he says, repent for the kingdom of heaven is near. And he says, the king is coming. He's on his way. And that king is so great.

I'm not worthy to bend down and to unstrap his sandal. I'm not even worthy to do that. And so you should repent and be baptized. And Jesus then comes.

And he preaches. The kingdom of God is at hand. It's here. And he says, blessed are the poor in spirit. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the poor in spirit now.

Because they have the kingdom of heaven. Because they have me. They have the king. And so the gospels announce that the king is here. And then on the cross.

Jesus has a notice. Put over his cross. Do you remember what it said? Yes. It says, Jesus. The king of the Jews.

And with this big dig into our side. The gospels say. Here he is. This is your king. He's on the cross. He's crushing Satan's head.

And so in his greatest hour of weakness. The king triumphs. And every promise of the Old Testament. And every picture of the Old Testament comes true.

And Jesus is the forever king. And so God's kingdom. The big kingdom. The big kingdom. Is the kingdom of Jesus. The crucified one.

And that is the message of the Bible. And this is how it practically relates to us here and now. To live for the big kingdom.

Is to live for Jesus Christ. Living for God's glory. For others.

For stewardship. For relationship. For truth. All that boils down. Into one person. And it means living for Jesus. So if you aren't living for Christ.

Then the only alternative. Is that you're living for yourself. And living for Christ. Is the only way. That we can be liberated. From our little kingdom. Remember we've talked about this.

That we are so stuck. We are so in love. With ourselves. And with our kingdom. Only when Jesus Christ. Is put in the center of our life. Can that relationship.

Between our kingdom. And us. Be broken. Where we can actually start to. Overcome. Our. Desire. To live only for ourselves.

And so Christ is the center. Of God's kingdom. And so when you find him. The quest for more. Is ended. It's over.

He's the answer. To humanity's quest. For transcendence. And remember we talked about this. The very first week. There was the beauty queen. And she wants world peace.

And the football fan. He's in love. With his team. And he thinks of himself. As part of that organization. They're all trying to find transcendence. And they're failing.

But when people find Jesus Christ. It's all over. The quest is over. And we start living for something bigger. Than ourselves.

And we start living for ourselves. So why is Jesus Christ. The answer. To our restless hearts. Why. Why is he.

Why is he. Fulfill. That need for transcendence. That we have. That. That. When we find him. Why do we. Why is the quest over. It's because.

He really. Really. Is. At the center. Of everything. He's at the center. Of God's plan. For history. And time. For humanity.

Turn in your Bibles. To Colossians chapter 1. In. Verse 15. Jesus really. Really.

Is. The center. Of. Of everything. Colossians 1. Verse 15. I'll read. 15. Through. 23. He.

Speaking of Jesus Christ. Is the image. Of the invisible God. The firstborn. Over all creation. For by him. All things. Were created. Things in heaven.

And on earth. Visible. And invisible. Whether thrones. Or powers. Or rulers. Or authorities. All things. Were created. By him. And for him.

He is before all things. And in him. All things. Hold together. And he is the head of the body. The church. He is the beginning. And the firstborn.

From among the dead. So that in everything. He might have the supremacy. For God was pleased. To have all his fullness. Dwell in him. And through him. To reconcile. To himself.

All things. Whether things on earth. Or things in heaven. By making peace. Through his blood. Shed on the cross. Once. You were alienated. From God. And were enemies.

In your minds. Because of your evil behavior. But now. He has reconciled you. By Christ's physical body. Through death. To present you. Holy. In his sight. Without blemish.

And free from accusation. If you continue. In your faith. Established. And firm. Not moved. From the hope. Held out. In the gospel. This is the gospel.

That you heard. And that you. That has been proclaimed. To every creature. Under heaven. And of which I. Paul. Have become a servant. Jesus is. Is at the center.

Of everything. That God is doing. He is at the center. Of our creation. He is the king. Of creation. Look at verses 15. And 16. He's the image. Of the invisible God.

The firstborn. Over all creation. Firstborn means. He's the preeminent one. He is the one. That has the supremacy. Over creation. He's the heir.

Of all creation. The firstborn. In that culture. Was always. The heir. The primary one. And it was his responsibility. To rule. Over the inheritance. And so.

When God. Made. Our world. Everything that we see. Everything that we see. He made it. For Jesus Christ.

And he. Meant. To give it. To him. To give it. To his son. He made it. For his son. And that's what the end of verse 16 says. All things were created.

By him. And for him. So. Jesus Christ. The son of God. Was instrumental. In. The creation. God. Made the world.

By him. And Paul is saying the same thing. That John says. At the beginning of his gospel. In the beginning. Was the word. And the word was. With God.

And the word. Was God. He was with God. In the beginning. Through him. All things were made. Nothing was made. That has been made. Without him. Jesus.

Was instrumental. In creation. And he. Is. The heir. Of creation. So. Creation.

Was made. For Jesus. The stars. Were made. For Jesus. Jesus. Have you ever thought. That maybe the reason.

That there are billions. And billions. Of galaxies. Of billions. And billions. Of stars. Is. Not. Primarily. For you.

To look at. But. They're made. For Jesus. For him. To enjoy. You. Seeing. And enjoying. Them. As secondary.

And you. Seeing. And enjoying. Them. As for a purpose. So that. Through them. You can enjoy. Jesus. Jesus. Is who. They are for. And.

When God. Was making. The world. In all. Of its. Abundance. This whole. Universe. He was making. Something great. For his son. And so.

Our earth. Is too small. We know. How small. Our earth is. And how. It's just a speck. In the universe. When you. Pull back. A little bit. Of ways. And so.

Our father. He creates. Planets. And he creates. Stars. And asteroids. And comets. And supernovas. And black holes. And all sorts of things. That we. Don't even know about.

He creates them. And he gives them. To Jesus. Well not only. Are created things. Visible. Things. For him. But things. That are invisible. Paul.

Here calls. The invisible things. Thrones. Or powers. Or rulers. Or authorities. And he's probably. Referring to. Angelic. Beings. Of some kind. So. And we don't know.

What that. That means. So God has created. Realms of being. And he's created. Beings. That. We don't have any part of.

Do you know the difference. Between an authority. And a power. And a ruler. And a throne. Well. We don't. But. But God has made them all. And he's made them all. For Jesus. So he's made angels.

And seraphim. And cherubim. And flying creatures. And all sorts of things. And he's made them all. For Jesus. And so apparently. There's these angelic beings. Ruling. And having authority.

And having responsibility. And carrying out things. And we don't have any idea. What they're doing. I mean. We have a little bit of an idea. But we don't. Really know.

But. Paul says. You know what they're doing. Whatever they're doing. They're doing it for Jesus. He's at the middle. Of everything. So he's the king of creation. Jesus Christ is.

The king of. This present creation. And he is the king of. The new creation. Look at verse 18. And he is the head of the body. The church.

He is the beginning. And the firstborn. From among the dead. So that in everything. He might have the supremacy. So God has already begun.

The new creation. And he began it. When he raised his son. From the dead. Jesus Christ was the beginning. Of the new creation. And so at. Christ's resurrection. Jesus was declared.

To be. The supreme king. He's the king of this world. And he's the king of. The next world. He's the king of heaven. And so. He's the king of everything. Created.

Or ever will be made. And remade. And however else. Jesus is at the center. Jesus is at the center. Of God's plan for salvation. And that's. What the second half. Of this section is about.

We were under God's judgment. We were enemies. Of God. In our minds. Because of our evil behavior. But. Through Jesus Christ. God reconciled us. To himself.

He reconciled us. Through Christ's physical body. On the cross. So. All salvation. All reconciliation. Any relationship.

Between. That we enjoy with God. It comes through Jesus Christ. And his cross. There's no other way. He is the only way. So. All of God's mercies.

And all of his blessings. Flow. Through. The cross. There's just simply. No salvation. Without Jesus. He's the center of our salvation.

And. He is our salvation. If we have him. We have salvation. So. If we're going to sum that up. We can say.

That Jesus Christ. Is at the center of everything. He really. Really. Is. We don't put him there. He isn't put there.

By us thinking it. It is a fact. God has made it. True. Jesus. Is at the center of everything. And sometimes. We pretend to be.

But all we're doing is. Stealing his throne from him. Because that is his throne. That is his place. So the heavens and the earth.

God's purposes for everything. For all of time and history. Is centered. Around. Is orbiting. Around someone. And it's not you.

And it's not me. It's Jesus. Jesus. And so that should radically. Change. The way I live. When I. Understand.

That the bottom line. Reality. Is. That Jesus Christ. Is what everything. Is about. It should. Change. The way I live. Life. So what will Christ centered.

Living. Look like. That's what we're going to spend the rest of our time on. What is Christ centered. Living going to look like. Four things. If we're living. With Christ at the center.

We will see Christ. As our source. We will see Christ. As our source. So Christ is the fountain. And. Everything that we have. And enjoy. Our lives.

And our experiences. That is. The streams. Those are the streams. That come from Jesus. He is the fountain. Listen to Tripp. Here. I am recognizing. That everything.

That is really worth having. Is a gift. From his hands. Here. I recognize. That. I could not have written. My own story. My location. Gifts.

Talents. Abilities. Opportunities. And blessings. All. Come. From him. So the Christ centered life. The. Big kingdom living.

That we're going to be talking about. For the rest of. Our time in this book. It starts with seeing. Christ. As the source. Of our life. He's the source. Of. Our. Our physical life.

Of our opportunities. Of our abilities. Where you're located. It's all determined. By Jesus Christ. And they all come from him. All the good gifts. That you enjoy. They come from him.

He's the source. Of everything. That we have. So let me ask you. How will you see your lives. If.

You don't. See Christ. As your source. What will your life. Be marked by. How will you live. If. If you're viewing life. As.

Christ. Is not. The source. I mean. If we're the only thing. In the picture. If. If we're where the picture. Comes from. Then I'm going to be focusing. On myself. What else can we say.

Steve. I'm panicking. Desperation. Like. If. If I'm going to get anything. I need to get it. So. I. I. Desperate. Right.

Yeah. Despair. Desperation. You're going to go into situations. And. If you're seeing that. You know what. I have to have what it takes. And I simply don't have what it takes.

If. If you're not looking to Christ. The only alternative. Is to despair. It's the only alternative. We can be arrogant too.

Why would we be arrogant. If. If we're not seeing Christ. As our source. I think we're in control. Okay. God. It depends on us. And not others. Right. Yeah. And if something does happen to come off.

Well in our lives. Well it's because of me. I did it. And so I get to be arrogant. So. When. When we take Christ out of the picture. Where we.

Think that. Our lives. Come from us. Our strength. Comes from us. Our opportunities. Are self created. Then. We're either moved to arrogance. Or just. Total despair.

Yes. There. There's also anger. Because. We are totally dependent. On ourselves. And it works out. For error. And if we're totally dependent. On ourselves. And it doesn't.

Now. Then it's everybody else's fault. And so we're angry. Because they didn't do. What we. We can even be angry. With ourselves. We'll start beating ourselves up.

Because. You know. I don't have what it takes. And so I'm mad at myself. Tripp goes on to say this. As I see Christ as my source. I also admit.

That I cannot be what I'm supposed to be. Or do what I am supposed to do. Apart from a constant supply. Of his grace. I need wisdom. Strength. Love. Patience.

Perseverance. And faith. That I do not have on my own. To see Christ as your source. Means to measure. Your potential. Not by the limits.

Of your natural ability. But by the unending resources. Of his grace. Isn't that wonderful? Let me. Let me repeat that. To see Christ as your source.

Means to measure. Your potential. Not by the limits. Of your natural ability. But by the unending resources. Of his grace. So the little kingdom.

It measures. What I can do. By my own abilities. But the big kingdom. Measures what I can do. By what Jesus Christ can do.

So. The little kingdom says. I cannot witness in this situation. And the big kingdom says. I can. Because. Through Christ. I can do all things.

He strengthens me. To do all these things. The little kingdom says. I cannot. Put up with my kids. For one more minute. And the big kingdom says. By God's grace.

By Jesus Christ. And with his help. I can. I can parent. And so the big kingdom. Measures. What I can do.

By what Jesus Christ. The king can do. So Christ is our source. What does a big kingdom.

Centered life mean? A Christ centered life mean? It means that he's our source. It means that Christ is our motive. He's our motive. If Christ is my motive.

Then surely. Or if Christ is my source. Then surely he should be the reason. That I do everything. He should be at the center. Of why I do the things that I do.

Christ is at the center. Of what history is about. What God is doing. And so I should want to join him. In what he's doing. If my life is supposed to be about.

Jesus. Then I should be. Asking myself. At every turn. Okay. What. What should I do? And. I should do this.

Whatever I do. Because of what Jesus has done for me. He should be the motive. Of what I'm doing. I want to please him. He's loved me. He's saved me.

He's given me all these opportunities. And so I want. To live for him. I want. To serve him. And so he's going to define. My purpose. Jesus is going to define.

When I'm happy. And when I'm upset. He's going to. He's going to be the master. And I'm going to be the disciple. And I will follow him. So.

I'm going to choose. What pleases Jesus. Over what pleases me. So he's our source. He's our motive. Thirdly. He's our goal.

He's our goal. Paul knew. What it meant. To live a Christ. Centered life. He said. For me to live. Is. Christ.

For me to live. Is Christ. So. Exalting Christ. Was Paul's goal. In everything. So. Right before he said. For me to live. Is Christ. He said. I eagerly expect.

And hope. That I will now. I will. In no way. Be ashamed. But will have. Sufficient courage. So that now. As always. Christ. Will be exalted.

In my body. Whether by life. Or death. For me to live. Is Christ. And to die. Is gain. So Paul. Why do you want to live? I want to live.

To exalt. Christ. Paul. How do you want to die? I want to die. Exalting. Jesus Christ. That's my goal. My life.

Is nothing. His glory. Is everything. His kingdom. Is everything. And so. When we live. A Christ centered. Big kingdom.

Life. Then we are going to embrace. Paul's way of thinking. So. Moms and dads. Why do you want to live? I want to live for Christ.

I want to parent. For Christ. Men. Why are you going to go to work? I'm going to go to work. For Christ. We can go on and on.

I want Christ to be known. I want him to be exalted. I want him to be worshipped. I want his kingdom to come. And his will. To be done. So. I want his agenda.

To set the agenda. Of my family. And I want his name. To be exalted. At work. And I want his glory. To shape my life. My family. My marriage. My parenting.

My life. My death. I want everything. That my life. Ever touches. To glorify him. So he is the goal. And so.

I'm going to leave. My puny. Ugly. Selfish. Little kingdom behind. And I'm going to embrace. Jesus. And what he wants. And I'm going to say. Jesus. You are worth living for.

You are worth living for. And you are worth dying for. You are worth suffering for. And being persecuted for. Jesus. You are worth getting cancer for. You are worth getting sick for.

You are worth poverty. And starvation. And those things. I'm going to count gain. If by them. I can exalt Christ. But if something good. Comes in my life.

And it does not exalt Christ. I will count those good things. Loss. Because I'm not measuring. By my comfort. And by my life. And by my pleasures anymore. I am measuring.

What is good. And what is bad. By what exalts Jesus. And what doesn't. And so. If I can get cancer. And exalt him through my cancer. I will gladly embrace cancer. Obviously.

It's. Cancer in and of itself. Is not a good thing. I'm not saying that. But Paul was able. To look at persecution. Which is a bad thing. And say. That I count these things gain. Because through them.

I am glorifying him. I'm glad I'm in prison. Because now it gives me a chance. To talk to the Roman guards. So when I live a Christ centered. Big kingdom life. Christ is my goal.

And lastly. He's my hope. He's my hope. He's my confidence. So what are you hoping for? What are you hoping for?

What do you say? If I just had. Blank. Then. My life would be great. In the big kingdom.

Christ is all of our hope. And all of our confidence. So he occupies our minds. He. He controls our dreams. The things that we want.

Are centered around him. And we're expecting him to help. We're expecting Jesus Christ to come. And really help me in my life. And. And.

We're banking on his grace. So I'm going to go into this difficult situation. And I know. I don't. Have. The resources.

In and of myself. To handle it. I cannot do it. But I'm going to go anyways. Because Jesus Christ will help me. He's my hope.

I'm not depending on my own resources. I'm not depending on some. Worldly good. I'm not. Depending on other people. Or my job. Or anything. My hope is not there.

My hope is in Jesus Christ. So. The Christ centered life. We see that Christ is our source. He's our motive.

He's our goal. He's our hope. So is Christ the center of your life? Is that the way you're looking at things?

Is Christ the reason you're doing things? Tripp concludes the chapter like this. If I watched the video. Of your last month. Listening to what you said.

And why you said it. What would I notice most? If I watched how you made decisions. And related to others. Noting. What you were interested in.

And fought for. What kingdom would it reveal? If I saw how you dealt with responsibility. And invested your free time. And if I saw you in both busy and quiet moments.

Even hearing your silent conversations with yourself. Would I conclude that Christ. Is the center of your life? And when I read something like that.

I am so happy that Jesus Christ is not only the center of all things. But he's my savior. Because. A lot of my life is not.

Live with Christ at the center. And Jesus is our great savior. Who had mercy on us. He died to take away. Our sins.

Our sins of selfishness. Our sins of seeking my own kingdom. And my own good. And my own glory. He paid the penalty. That I deserve. For my rabid desire.

For my own kingdom. And so when I look at my astronomical failure. I am so glad that. Jesus Christ. Has died. For those sins. And that.

I was not redeemed. With perishable things. Like silver or gold. But with the blood of. Jesus. Christ. A lamb without spot or blemish. And to his praise.

And to his name. Be praise forevermore. He is. He is. The center of it all. And so our lives should. Revolve around him. We have a couple minutes. Is there any comments.

Or. Questions. Or suggestions. Or. Anything. I got to think. When we talk about arrogance. I got to think. About. I got to think. About. I'm going to extend out. Here one day. He's in this. And this is a great kingdom.

I feel. Of course. We know what happened. Later on. He was. Made for a grace. An animal. But he was. Job. Yeah. He saw himself.

As the source. Of this kingdom. Yeah. And it wasn't. A little bit later. It was. Right now. He was turned into a. Wild animal.

God knows how to humble the proud. God knows how to humble the proud.

Becoming increasingly aware of. Asking. To the TV. What God. Are you talking about. But if the person named. Jesus Christ. And.

That put the whole subject. In a very different light. And this whole lesson today. Was. Pointing everything to Christ. Not. God.

Because. God. Can have a small Jesus. Many God. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Or. I. Yeah.

It usually comes down to. I have faith in. My faith. And. Myself. I. Yeah. Yeah. It. It doesn't mean anything. A lot of times. And that's why. Where.

This is different. Because Jesus Christ. Is our hope. He's what we are banking on. We're not banking on. Yeah. The God in the sky. That. Some random athlete.

Talks about. Well let's pray. And then we'll be dismissed. Our heavenly father.

We ask that you would. Give us grace. To see ourselves. And after we see ourselves. Will you give us grace. To see Jesus.

And. I pray that we would start living. A more Christ centered life. Thank you for the work. That you have begun in us. It is a good work. And we pray that you would go on. Working.

Until completion. Thank you that one day. The battle will be over. And that Christ. The crucified one. Will be king. Of.

Of everything. And that all of his enemies. Will be put under his feet. And all the little kingdoms. Will be crushed. And it will only be his kingdom. And so we.
