God is All Wise

Almighty, glorious God, how blessed we are to be your sons and daughters, to have you as our father, reconciled to us through the blood of your son, to know that all that needed to be suffered has already been suffered.

All that has needed to be obeyed has already been obeyed and that that perfect righteousness rests on our account this morning.

How thankful we are for your Holy Spirit who works in us, the obedience to your holy commandments. How thankful we are that even when men mistreat us, that we have no reason to be angry and full of rage.

We have every reason to trust you and to entrust them into your care. You're the righteous judge. And so help us to learn how to live in this world that can be so at odds with us.

Now we're we're glad for the recurring Lord's Day. And we're glad to be able to set aside our work. But, Lord, you know, it's harder to set aside the cares of life.

So help us now to unpack all of our burdens and cares. Make yourself to be the center of our thoughts of our worship in this day.

Bless each Sunday school class. May we come away knowing you better. And. May this day be one in which you're worshiped and praised the world over.

We ask in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Amen. All right. We're studying knowing God. And we've come to those chapters that are devoted to the different attributes that God has.

And last week it was God is immortal. He's unchanging. So whatever he was, he is today and will be tomorrow. That will be true of the attribute that we're going to study this morning.

Romans turn to chapter 16. The very last verse of the book holds for us the attribute of God today. It's a doxology.

It's a praise. And. And. After this glorious. Epistle to the Romans and all that is contained in it.

Paul comes to this. To the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ. Amen. Amen. He's the only wise God.

So we're studying the wisdom of God then this morning. Well, what does the Bible mean when it says that God is wise? Well, right away we need to distinguish between wisdom and knowledge.

They're related, but they're not the same. Wisdom involves knowledge. It involves intelligence. But it's something more.

It's the right use of knowledge. You've got these computer hackers that that know more about computers than I'll ever know. And with their intelligence, they're able to go into corporations and and personal business files and banking and and to cause all kinds of problems and to cost our nation millions and billions to protect against them and their viruses that they spread and and to buy new computers.

We wouldn't question their intelligence and knowledge of computers, but would we call them wise or the CEO of a Fortune 500 business who who's very intelligent and it enables him to make a lot of money.

And he spends all that money on himself and he lives for the weekends and and just parties all weekend and goes back and makes more money with all of his brain power Monday through Friday so he can enjoy the weekends.

No question as to his knowledge, his business acumen. But would we call him wise? The Lord Jesus would call him a fool. Because when you die, whose?

Will these things be then and you will be bankrupt for eternity? Luke 12. So to be wise. Knowledge must be harnessed to the right end.

And so wisdom, Packer says, is the ability to know and the desire to choose the best and highest goal. As well as the best and surest means to attaining it.

So to be wise, we've got to to have the knowledge of what is the best end. But we must not only know what it is, we must have that choice of it.

We must choose that for ourselves to be truly wise. And then we must know the best and surest way or means to getting to that end. That's. Wisdom.

That's the wisdom of God. So God always knows and chooses the very best goal or ends. As well as the very best means to getting to that end.

Now, that's something that God is. It's not just the way he acts once in a while. It's his essence. He is wise. He is the only wise God.

So just as he's holy in all that he does, so he's wise in all he does. He cannot miss the right end.

And he can't miss the right means to that end. Men often gain wisdom by experience. We grow wiser trustfully as we grow older.

But not God. He always was wise. He's not becoming wiser. He's unchangeably wise. Too wise to be mistaken. So this is our God.

And not only drawn from Packer's book, but also here for a few things I've drawn from Sharnock. Stephen Sharnock's book on the attributes and existence of God.

But he points out how that wisdom marks all that God does. He is wise. And so everything that he does has the stamp of wisdom on it. Creation, salvation, providence, and sanctification.

Those are our four points this morning. First of all, creation. Turn with me to Psalm 104. The 104th Psalm. The wise man says, by wisdom he created the earth.

By wisdom he created the earth. So without wisdom, this world would be nothing but confusion. Nothing would be working in order and complementing each other.

It would just be a mass chaos. So Psalm 104 takes us through the creation.

But with a special eye to noticing the wisdom of God. So we're not going to take the time to read it. But let's dip down to verse 24. After he's talked about the lions, the birds, the trees, and everything in creation.

He comes to verse 24. And he says, how many are your works, O Lord? In wisdom you made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.

And it's just as full of God's wisdom as it is of his creatures. So that there's nothing in all creation.

But that it demonstrates for us something of the wisdom of God. All of creation is a divine classroom on God's wisdom.

So you can go into any study of the creation. And learn of the wisdom of God. Biology and physics and chemistry and astronomy and anatomy.

Are just studies in the wisdom of God. As men come to appreciate God's wisdom. Think of the wisdom.

Well, drop down to verse 34. So after he's thought about creation. And especially as it displays God's wisdom. He says, may my meditation be pleasing to him.

As I rejoice in the Lord. Do you know that when you think upon the creation. And the wisdom of God displayed in the creation. Your meditation. Your very thoughts. Are pleasing him.

So students. As you're studying. And you're studying something about God's creation. And you're appreciating more than just the surface. But you're tying it to God. And seeing. Isn't God wise.

And the way he made. The eyeball. Or whatever you're studying. Your meditation is pleasing to him. So. The wisdom.

Of God is seen in creation. It's the wisdom of the spider. In her web. Her web is both home. And net. To catch her food. That's the wisdom of God.

The order of the heavenly bodies. All in their proper orbits. Display the wisdom of God. The water cycle. Taking up water from the oceans.

And the lakes. And transporting it. Via the clouds. Clouds. God's truckers. Transporting the water.

To get it over to where it needs to be. To water. The dry. Ground. And then start the cycle. All over again. Wisdom. The winds.

Serve God's wise purposes. Purifying the air. Carrying rain clouds. To dry places. Even working his plans. For destruction. The seasons.

Sharnock says. Of the winter. It makes the juice. The sap. Retire into the earth. And fortifies the plants. And fixes their roots. It moistens the earth.

That was dried before. By the heat of summer. And cleanses. And prepares it. For a new fruitfulness. You thought about. The changing of seasons. What God is doing. To renew the face of the earth.

Wisdom. The members of our body. The whole. Universe. Isn't it? In which to lose ourselves. And the wisdom of God. So that we say with David.

I am fearfully. And wonderfully. Made. In wisdom. He made us all. We breathe out carbon. Carbon. Dioxide. And we need oxygen.

And it just so happens. That the green plants around us. Need carbon dioxide. And give off oxygen. Well that's handy. Isn't it? God in wisdom. Created it.

That way. That we might not only breathe. But use our breath. To praise. The wisdom of God. That ordained it that way. And in doing so. He's glorified.

And he's pleased. So creation. Displays his glory. Inventions. Human inventions. Are things that cause us. To stand in awe. Aren't they? And the more.

Sophisticated the gadget. The more amazed. We are. It demonstrates. The wisdom. Of the inventor. All the gears. Of the clock. Working together. To bring about.

The good end. Of being able. To tell time. And the more. Intricate the invention. The more wisdom. That's revealed. The more parts.

That are all. Working together. For the common end. The more wisdom. And skill needed. So it's one thing. To have 15 gears. All working together. In perfect unity. In order. To make the clock.

Keep. Proper time. But it's another thing. To have billions. Upon billions. Upon billions. Of gears. All working together. In precise. Order. To bring about.

God's designed end. Whether that just be. With the cells. Of our body. Or the stars. Of the heaven. Or the. The events. Of the earth. And the decisions. Of men. The more intricate.

The more wisdom. That is being displayed. In wisdom. You made them all. Sharnak says. As every river. Can conduct us. To the sea.

So every creature. Points us. To an ocean. Of infinite wisdom. There's not a plant. Or flower below. But makes thy. Glories known. God. So let's develop.

An eye. For wisdom. We live. In his creation. Let's not walk. Like the animals. And just. Give a dumb stare. To the creation. But let us. Penetrate. To the wisdom.

Of God. Behind it. Again. Sharnak. The world. Was not created. To be forgotten. Nor man. Created. To be unobservant. Of it.

Well. In redemption. We see God's wisdom. You can't think about. The plan of salvation. For long. Without seeing.

Wisdom. Just sparkling. All over. The plan. The way that God. Works out. Salvation. First of all. It works toward. The highest end. The salvation of men.

Brings glory to God. There's the end. But God knows. How to. To bring about. The salvation of men. And the precise means. To get man. To this. State of salvation.

And that. Is summed up. In the Lord Jesus. In whom are hidden. All the treasures. Of wisdom. And knowledge. God allowed man. To fall. Into a damning.

Disease. To show his. Own wisdom. In creating. The remedy. In Jesus Christ. He draws. The ultimate good.

Out of. The ultimate. Evil. So. Let's think. Just for a moment. This morning. About the real. Dilemma. And problem. In working out.

A solution. Of man's salvation. How can God. Be both just. And the justifier. Of the ungodly. It's a bigger problem.

Than most of us realize. First of all. On the one hand. You have God's justice. And it cries. For our punishment. Condemn him. Condemn him. It points. To broken laws.

To ungrateful lives. And it calls. For our. Destruction. The soul that sins. It shall die.

You've said that. You must punish him. Justice cries. To not punish. Is to further demean. The lawgiver. It's to undo.

His righteousness. His justice. His holiness. His glory. To put a smirch. On his very character. And so justice cries. Damn him. It's necessary.

To punish the sinner. In order to preserve. The honor of God. But on the other hand. Mercy. Is crying. Pardon her. Pardon her. What.

Will you create man. Will you see him fall. And then destroy him. What will become. Of your plan. To. Have your creation. Glorifying you.

And enjoying you. Forever. Will it all come to this. Would that not make. Satan the victor. Should he forever. Rejoice over you. In triumph.

Would you have no image. Bearers on the earth. To bear your glory. Is mercy. Not as much. A part of your nature. As justice. Is only justice. To be glorified. And not mercy.

Is this jewel. Of your nature. To be hidden forever. In your bosom. So that none. Will see it. Or see its expressions. Oh rather. Is not. Man's misery. And sin.

The perfect opportunity. To display. Your mercy. And so mercy cries. Pardon him. And justice says. You can't pardon. The soul that sins. It must die. So what's to be done.

Mercy. Crying the one. And justice. For the other. How can both. Be given full expression. Must it be one. Or the other. One at the expense.

Of the other. And it's infinite wisdom. That steps forward. In the eternal. Counsels of God. With the divine. Solution. That through the substitutionary.

Death of. God's eternal son. A sacrifice. Of infinite value. Would be made. So that justice. Might be upheld. And mercy.

As well. Might be magnified. God's. And both. In the same. Act of. The crucifixion. At the cross. Then. Justice does. Get its way.

And punishes. And dams. And at the cross. Mercy does. Does get its way. And pardons. And freely forgives. Jesus.

Gets the justice. In my place. And I get the mercy. And. Not only. Is God's. Justice. And mercy. Magnified.

At the cross. But so. Is his wisdom. That designed. This. Perfect. Plan. And so. At the cross. Righteousness.

And peace. Kiss. Justice. Smiles. And asks. No more. I got everything. I got. I wanted. And mercy. Says. I got everything. That I wanted. They're friends. At the cross.

What a naughty. Problem. Untangled. What a glorious. End. Sinners. Mercifully. Saved. Not at the expense. Of compromising. God's justice.

But rather. At the expression. Of justice. And mercy. Together. And what it best means. To achieve this desired end. Of our salvation.

The substitutionary. Curse bearing. Of Jesus Christ. And so that one act. Brings out. Justice.

Like nothing else. Does. And it brings out mercy. Like nothing else. Does. Jesus Christ. The wisdom. Of God. God's wisdom.

In action. There at the Calvary. The solution. To man's problem. And so. In the book of Romans. Where Paul draws out. The whole problem. Starts with man's sin.

What's the answer. To this problem. So when he gets. To the end. Of his argument. In the first. Eleven chapters. The very first. Attribute. That he.

Mentions. In his doxology. Romans. Eleven. Thirty. Three. Oh. The death. Of the riches. Of the wisdom. Of God. You know.

I might say. Oh. What love. That's right. But Paul says. Oh. The wisdom. The death. Of the wisdom. Of God. To work out. Such a glorious.

Plan. Of salvation. And that's where he ends. The book. Praise. To the only wise. God. Not only.

To. Bring about. Salvation. In a way that. Glorifies his justice. And mercy. Both. But. That uses. The hardness.

And unbelief. Of Israel. In order to reach. The Gentiles. And then uses. The Gentiles. To make the. The Jews jealous. For salvation. The wisdom.

Of God. In the way. God. Ordered. The whole thing. With Israel's. Unbelief. And hardness. Of heart. And. And the gospel. Going to the Gentiles. Oh. The depth. Of the riches.

Of the wisdom. And knowledge. Of God. And so. Paul says. In Ephesians 3. Now to. Now through the church. The manifold. Wisdom of God. Has been made known. Look at the church.

And see Jew. And Gentile. Save people. For eternity. And you see. The wisdom. Of God. Displayed. Ephesians 3. 10. So God's wisdom. Is seen. In the school.

Of creation. It's seen. In the school. Of redemption. It's seen. Thirdly. In providence. God's wise. Governing. Of all his creatures. And all their actions.

All the time. Romans 8. 28. He is able. You see. To work out. All things. For the good. Of his people. Who love him. And are called.

By his purpose. Using. Sinful instruments. To bring about. His good purposes. That takes God's wisdom.

Doesn't it? More wisdom. Is needed. To make something good. With bad tools. And instruments. That are ill fitted. For the work. It's one thing.

To build a mansion. With shovels. And hammers. And saws. And drills. And tape measures. It takes some wisdom. To do so. But it's another thing.

To build a mansion. With fire. And dynamite. Whose very nature. Is contrary. To building up. The very nature. Of the instruments. Are to destroy. What is the wisdom.

To take those instruments. And to use them. To build up. And to bring about. God's. Greatest end. And so God uses.

Devils. And he uses. Evil men. Whose nature is to destroy. To bring about. His good. Purposes. Amazing wisdom. So you've got. Joseph's.

Brother. Brothers. And they do. A terrible. Evil. Meant to destroy. Joseph. And God uses that. To weave.

About. A perfect. Good. A good thing. To the saving. Of many lives. Taking Joseph. Down into. Egypt. And making him.

Second in command. To Pharaoh himself. He knows how to bring. Good. Out of evil. He uses the wicked. Babylonians. To chasten. To spank.

To correct. His. Wayward children. Amazing. He. He. He. Brings. About. Their. Greater. Sanctification. By such. Wicked. Tools.

Judas. Iscariot. And. Pilate. And. Herod. The Jewish. Leaders. They're. God's. Tools. And. As they do their worst.

To destroy. Jesus Christ. God is using them. To bring about. The salvation. Of a multitude. That no man. Can number. The devil himself. Has made. God's instrument.

To do his good pleasure. And so he's the one. Who stirs up the Jews. To crucify Jesus. So that. Mankind. Might be. Redeemed.

And actually. Crush the serpent's head. The sin of man. And the malice. Of Satan. What kind of building. Materials. Are these. To build honor.

To the name of God. In the salvation. Of sinners. So Onesimus. The wicked. Slave. Runaway slave. Runs away. And by his evil deed. He runs right into Paul. In prison.

And is converted. What a glorious end. Out of such a wicked. Deed. He knows how to fetch. Glory to himself. Through the vile. Life of.

Pharaoh. Pharaoh. Becomes the occasion. For displaying. His power. In the ten plagues. And getting a name. For himself. That endures to this end. To this day.

How often. Have the heresies. Of men. In church history. Been the occasion. Of clearing up the truth. Some doctrine. That needed to get. Further. Distillation. And expression.

And confessions of faith. To guard against air. And it came about. By. Men that hated the truth. And held to a lie. But it. Was the building material. That God used. To preserve his church.

In the truth. Working good. From evil. Materials. My own sins. As a Christian. Now there's a challenge. For God. How can he use.

Something as vile. As my sins. To bring about. The greatest good. My sanctification. My holiness. His glory.

Likeness to Jesus. Well he knows. How to do that. He's so wise. He can use my sins. To humble me.

I need that. He can use my sin. To make me hate. My sin more. To be less dependent. Upon myself. To see my frailty. My need to watch.

And pray. And lean hard. On Jesus. Now. The more naughty. And tangled. Any problem is. The more wisdom. That's needed. To unravel it.

There's that. Ball of string. And it's just. A tangle. Of knots. Who can unravel it? Well it takes. A lot of wisdom. The more naughtier. And bigger. The ball is.

And so. King Solomon. Is given wisdom. Beyond his peers. To administrate. Now. To administrate. His kingdom. Remember. The two prostitutes. Both claiming. The child. The living child.

Was theirs. And he's given. Wisdom. To penetrate. To the truth. Of the matter. And to discover. The true mother. Of the living child. And so.

We too. Have been left. To feel our need. For wisdom. And sorting out. Problems. In our homes. In our. Jobs. In our church. Think of the.

The problems. That God is. Daily sorting out. In his world. With billions. And billions. And billions. Of knots. One tangled mess. And yet.

He'll bring it all. To the good end. For which he created it. You know. The reason God. Let's this old world. Spin on. In its evil. And destructive ways. And grow. And evil men. Grow worse.

And worse. The reason he allows. That to happen. Is because. The bigger. The mess. The greater. The glory. When the redeemer. Returns.

And fixes. Every single. Not. Entangle. At the renewal. Of all things. Acts chapter 3. So.

That's why. Things keep going. From bad to worse. And that's why. The world. Goes on. In its wickedness. Oh the depth. Of the riches. And knowledge.

Of God. And we'll say that. When Jesus returns. And renews. All things. The ability. To see. And choose. The highest goal. And to choose.

Just the right means. To get to it. That's wisdom. And God demonstrates it. In providence. And a lot will be.

A lot of this wisdom. Will be. Revealed. In the day of judgment. You know. A lot of God's wisdom. Goes unappreciated. It is. It's just. Right under the radar. Of men. And they don't even see it.

But the day of judgment. Will. Expose. How wise. God was. And will stand in awe. Of his wisdom. The fourth area. In which God's. Wisdom is seen. And we've touched upon it.

But it's sanctification. Our sanctification. We can't. Recognize. God's wisdom. Packer says. If we mistake. The end. For which he's working. If we think. That the end.

For which God is working. Is for me. To have a comfortable life. And have no problems. In my life. And to kind of live above it all. Then we're not going to see. God is being very wise.

In the means. That he's using. Because he's not moving me. Very close to that. Problem free life. That I'm envisioning. Is the end. That he's wanting to bring me to. We'll fail to see his wisdom.

In our trials. And sorrows. And pains. That Packer reminds us. That the chief end. That God is aiming at. Is. To change us. Into the likeness of his son.

That's the end. That's the very best end. For any human being. To be made like Jesus. And if that's the end. Then he's. He's using some. Unusual tools.

And instruments. To get that. Done. In our lives. He's all together wise. In knowing how to bring. That about. He uses the surest means.

Of attaining his good end. So does he need. To teach us humility. Well he just lets us. Go for a while. On our own. And soon Peter.

Is denying. His Lord. Three times. He thought. He could. He'd stand with Jesus. To the death. But he must be humbled. And so sanctified.

A deeper. Trust. On the Lord Jesus. Does he need. To wean us. From the love of this world. The things in the world. Well he knows.

How to do that too. Does he need. To lift our minds. From the earthly things. The temporal things. That are passing away. And perishing. With the using. To get us. To fix our eyes.

On eternal things. On Christ. Who sits at God's right hand. He knows. How to lift. Lift. Our vision. Heavenward. To turn it away. From this disgusting earth.

It's like we had. An aha experience. At our home. Last night. With this. Tornado threat. And. Trent was. Out and about. And. It scared him.

And he said. That last night. Before we went to bed. Do you mean. We could have. That a tornado. Could just. Demolish this house. Everything we have here. It's like. I don't know.

If he never thought about it. But he said it several times. To us. Yeah. Weaniness. From the love of the world. That's right. Grant. Everything we've got. Every single thing.

It's all destined. For the burning. What do you got. After. The final fire. What do you take. Into eternity. What can't be shaken. What can't be burnt. God has a way of.

Of. Lifting our eyes. To things. Eternal. Perfect wisdom. Does he need. To teach us more patience. More of the patience. Of Christ. His wisdom. Designs. Perfectly.

Suited. Opportunities. Where we can exercise. More patience. And so. The Bible. Puts. God's wisdom. On display. In the way. He works.

To change. People. Into the image. Of his son. So. Does Abraham. Does Abraham. Need to learn. To trust in God. To wait on him. To not lean.

On his own. Understanding. Then. The all wise. God. Knows how to design. The best curriculum. For. Abraham. He's so prone. To lean on his own. Understanding.

Wasn't he? In Egypt. He's got a beautiful wife. And so. He fears for his life. He leans.

On his own. Understanding. I'll say. She's my sister. No one will kill me. Then. To get her. God. And God. Takes him. Through that situation. To show him.

Just how futile. His plan. Was. It nearly. Got him. Both in trouble. Both killed. If he had just. Trusted in the Lord. When he's childless.

And growing older. What will I do? I've been promised. A nation. He leans. On his own. Understanding. And the understanding.

Of his wife. And he takes. Her handmaid. Hagar. To raise up. Seed. For himself. And then. When. Hagar. Gets pregnant. And starts. Vaunting it.

Over. Sarah. Who's still. Barren. He leans. On his own. Understanding. And that. Of Sarah. Again. And. Goes along. With her. Plan. To drive. Her. Out of. His house.

And into. The wilderness. And. To mistreat her. Leaning. On his own. Understanding. And so. God. Designs. The curriculum. With plenty. Of humbling. Circumstances.

Where he sees. The folly. Of leaning. On his own. Understanding. Does he need. To learn. To trust God. He gives him. All sorts. Of unfulfilled. Promises. Numerous. Offspring. He's 75.

Doesn't have a kid. He's got to wait. 25 more years. Before he finally. Has one. And then. God says. Go sacrifice. Your son. Your only son.

Constantly. Put him in. In the. In the pressure cooker. Of trial. Unfulfilled. Promise. Why? This man. Needs. To learn. To trust God. When he can't. See anything. Don't see any seed.

I don't see any land. The only land. He. He possessed. Was a graveyard. For himself. And his family. And yet. God promised him. As far as he could see. And so.

He puts him. Through the curriculum. To bring him out. Trusting in the Lord. Waiting for him. Bowing to his will. Obeying him. Whatever the command. God's wisdom.

In bringing about. Abraham's. Sanctification. And then there's Jacob. His grandson. He needs to be weaned. From his own cleverness. Doesn't he?

His own ingenuity. Gets in any tight fix. He can work it out. He's. He's a smart guy. He's clever. He's. He's scheming. Rather than.

Trusting on God. For the blessing. He's ever. On the. Sly. So he lights. It lies. And cheats. And tricks his way.

To blessing. Leaving a trail. Of destruction. In his wake. With his own father. His own brother. So what does God order up. For his. Curriculum. A tricky.

Father-in-law. Laban. Who. Promises him. His beautiful daughter. Rachel. And Jacob. Wakes up. After his marriage night.

And finds. Weak-eyed Leah. In bed with him. He's been tricked. The deceiver. Has been deceived. That's the curriculum. That he needs. To be sanctified. From his deceit.

And so his father-in-law. Changes his. His wages. Ten times. And. The whole thing. And then Esau's. On his way. To. To meet him. When he's going back home.

He's fearful. For his life. And that night. He wrestles. With God himself. And he comes. Finally. To let go. Of his own. Deceiving ways. Deceiving ways.

Scheming ways. And just to trust God. For his blessing. And he cries out to God. I will not let you go. Until you bless me. I'm done. Trying to. Weasel out. My blessing. You see.

God. Has perfect wisdom. He knows how. Hard to push. Jacob down. He knows. Just the wrestling move. To put on him. To make him. Just cleave. To God.

For a blessing. Now. This is the God. That's at work. In your life. And mine. For our greater. Sanctification. And he knows. Exactly how to get. The best end. In our lives.

To wean us. From all. Sin. So. What should our response. Be to this God. Only wise. Well. Humility and awe.

What infinite wisdom. The more we see of it. The more we feel. Our own ignorance. And should be humbled by it. Praise. It's what the psalmist. Is ever doing.

Praising God. For his wisdom. The only wise God. Trust. Confidence. In God. This all wise God.

Deserves our trust. And confidence. That was the principal lesson. To Job. In chapters 38. To 41. Job's baffled. Confused. About the problems. In his life. About the curriculum.

That God's putting him through. He doesn't see the end. That God is working on. And he cries out. For answers. But God is silent. And so he starts questioning. God's justice.

And God's government. Of the affairs of his life. And world. And finally. At chapter 38. Job gets what he wants. An audience with God. He wants answers. For as many questions.
