[0:00] I'm Stan, Bob Heaney's oldest son. My brother Tom is at the piano. When we lost mom eight months ago, none of us ever dreamed that we wouldn't have dad with us today. [0:16] So on behalf of all of our families, we want to express our deepest gratitude to all of you who have come to comfort and support us in our time of loss, to honor our father, brother, grandpa, pastor, friend, co-worker, and most of all, to worship God. [0:43] The God who made dad what he was to us all. As young children, dad taught us that worship to this glorious God is what we're made for. [0:58] As a foolish, selfish teenager, I didn't always appreciate those times like I do now. I remember when Susan, she was Susie then, my youngest sister arrived in the world. [1:11] And there was no room in our house to put her. So dad and mom had a bedroom, a basement bedroom finished off, and they stuck John, Tom, and I down there. [1:25] And the first thing dad did was to have a buzzer installed. And every morning at 630, I'd wake up to that grating noise. [1:39] Errr, errr, errr, errr. Three longs. We had our codes. And if you were one minute late to family worship, you were doing push-ups. [1:55] So now you know. The secret of why Tom is so much stronger and bigger than the rest of his brothers. We're a family blessed beyond measure. [2:15] And we pray that even as your presence is ministering to our hearts, so the worship of our awesome God will touch your hearts as well. We want God's blessing on this hour, and that's not something we take for granted. [2:31] So I've asked my brother-in-law, Paul Martin, to lead us in prayer. Let's pray together. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, You who are from everlasting, Who abides forever, Our refuge, Our sun and shield, You who hears prayers and daily bears our burdens, Who makes a home for the lonely, And upholds the weak, Incline your ear and hear the needy, You are good, And you do good, You put down one, You exalt another, You are in the heavens, And you do as you please, You made us, Not we ourselves, And all our days are appointed unto us, You are not like us, [3:34] For you are holy, But you know our frame, And you are mindful that we are dust, A flower that fades, A mist that evaporates, A blade of grass gone, And you will not abandon your people, Nor forsake your inheritance, You are abounding, In promise-keeping love, To all who call upon you, You are near the brokenhearted, And you save the crushed in spirit, You stand at the right hand of the needy, You are near to all who call upon you, You heal the brokenhearted, And you bind up their sorrows, You have compassion on all your servants, You never forsake those who seek you, So great God, Bring us out of the darkness, Out of the shadow of death, [4:37] And hear our cry, Our help comes from you, O Lord, Your consolations are our delight, You gave up Jesus for your people, How will you not also with him, Graciously give us all things, So glorify yourself, Comfort your people, Save the lost, And honor your great and holy name, We ask in the name of Christ, Amen. [5:09] Amen. Good afternoon, I'm Robert Jr., And I would like to thank all of you, For coming here today, As we celebrate, The work that God accomplished, In dad's life, And the work that he will, Certainly continue to accomplish, In his death, I'll be reading from Philippians, And like its author, Paul, Dad's life was truly Christ, And his death was certainly gain, Philippians 1, 20 through 27, I eagerly expect and hope, That I will in no way be ashamed, But will have sufficient courage, So that now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, Whether by life, Or by death, For to me, To live is Christ, And to die is gain, If I am to go on living in the body, This will mean fruitful labor for me, Yet what shall I choose? [6:05] I do not know, I am torn between the two, I desire to depart, And be with Christ, Which is far better, But it is more necessary for you, That I remain in the body, Convinced to this, I know that I will remain, And I will continue with all of you, For your progress, And joy in the faith, So that through my being with you again, Your joy in Christ Jesus, Will overflow, On account of me, Whatever happens, Conduct yourselves in a manner, Worthy of the gospel of Christ, To die is gain, But only for those who know what it means, To live is Christ, Take your blue hymnals, And turn with me to number 580, Hymn number 580, We sang this song a lot to dad, To grandpa in his last days, [7:06] And to me it never gets old, Because it expresses such profound, Timeless truths, We'll sing the first, third, And the fourth verses, When peace like the river, God's end left my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my love, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, It is well with my soul, It is well, [8:10] It is well, With my soul, With my soul, It is well, It is well, With my soul, Verse 3, I sing, I sing, O the midst of His glorious God, I sing, Not in part, But the whole, His name to the cross, And I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, O my soul, [9:12] It is well, It is well, With my soul, With my soul, It is well, It is well, With my soul, O Lord, O Lord, haste the day, When the grace shall be signed, The blood's evil path, As a scroll, The tongue shall resound, And the Lord shall descend, Even so, It is well, [10:14] With my soul, It is well, It is well, With my soul, With my soul, It is well, It is well, With my soul, Amen, Amen, Thanks so much for being here, For singing God's praises with us, It's very encouraging to our hearts, And we're thankful that you're here, I'm Charlie, And I'm going to read Psalm 16, 5 through 11, It talks about why we have hope, And why our sorrow is mixed with joy, It's inexpressible, Lord, [11:16] You have assigned me my portion and my cup, You have made my lot secure, The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places, Surely I have a delightful inheritance, I will praise the Lord who counsels me, Even at night my heart instructs me, I have set the Lord always before me, Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken, Therefore my heart is glad, And my tongue rejoices, My body also will rest secure, Because you will not abandon me to the grave, Nor will you let your Holy One see decay, You have made known to me the path of life, In your presence is fullness of joy, You will fill me with joy in your presence, [12:17] With eternal pleasures at your right hand, Amen. The other day I was using Dad's Bible To read him Psalm 93, And the Psalm ends with this phrase, The Lord on high, Is mighty, Is mighty. [12:40] And in the margin, Dad had a note to self, Make use of him, You wretched worm. Dad knew a sense of the sinfulness of his own heart, But he also knew his incredible creator God, With whom nothing is impossible, And he knew what it was, To make much use of his great God in prayer. [13:08] Stand with me, And let us exalt his great name together, As we sing, How great thou art. O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the world's thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout, The universe display, Then sings my soul, My Savior God, [14:11] To thee, How great thou art, How great thou art, How great thou art, How great thou art, And when I think, That God is sunnot sparing, Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, That on the cross, My burden, Gladly bearing, [15:14] He bled and died, To take away my sin, Then sings my soul, My Savior God, To thee, How great thou art, How great thou art, How great thou art, Then sings my soul, My Savior God, To thee, How great thou art, How great thou art, How great thou art, When Christ shall come, With shout of acclimation, [16:16] And take me home, What joy shall fill my heart, Then I shall bow, In a full adoration, And there proclaim, My God, How great thou art, Then sings my soul, My Savior God, My Savior God, To thee, How great thou art, How great thou art, How great thou art, Then sings my soul, My Savior God, How great the world, how great the world. [17:34] Dad often repeated a quote from Hudson Taylor. There is a living God. Now, he has spoken in his word. [17:49] He means what he says, and he will do all he has promised. I'm going to read from the book of Hebrews, chapter 13. [18:03] In a moment, my brother John will be using this as one of his texts as he preaches the memorial service message. Hebrews 13, verses 7 and 8. [18:15] Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. [18:32] Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Take your hymnals again and turn to 175. [18:48] 175. Praise the Lord. It's one of the most repeated phrases in the Psalms. [19:00] In the Hebrew language, it's just one word. Hallelujah. Job, that Old Testament saint, immediately upon learning of the loss of his ten children, fell down and worshipped. [19:17] The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. May the name of the Lord be praised. [19:33] Hallelujah. What a Savior. Man of sorrows. [19:48] What a name. For the Son of God who came. Who and sinners to reclaim. [20:05] Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Lord a Savior. Very champion. [20:18] Stalking room. In my place. The grace of death he stood Sealed by war and with his blood Hallelujah, what a Savior Guilty, violent, helpless, weak Starless Lamb of God was he All atonement carried me Hallelujah, what a Savior Lifted up was he to die [21:26] It is finished was his cry Now in heaven exalted by Hallelujah, what a Savior When he comes our glorious King All his ransom told to bring Then anew his song will sing Hallelujah, what a Savior Amen [22:27] If Bob Heaney did anything in life He spoke the word of God to us Isn't that right? [22:39] Whether it was from this pulpit Or standing around before or after a service In his home or in one of ours On the sidewalk or at a ball game On the phone, in a card or a note In one way or another He spoke God's word to us And when one of God's spokesmen dies The God who gave him to us Expects three things of us And they're all found in our text In Hebrews 13, 7 and 8 Remember your leaders Who spoke the word of God to you Consider the outcome of their way of life And imitate their faith For Jesus Christ is the same Yesterday, today and forever Remember We begin with remember [23:40] Remembering Bob Heaney And his memorial service Is a bit difficult for me to do He had a very distinct view Of what a funeral service should be It ought to keep God big And man small His comment to me On returning from one funeral He attended Sums up his frequent complaint Too much of man Not enough of Christ He hated to see God Pushed into the background While man took center stage And though he's not here to evaluate My message His words are still ringing in my ears And so if I don't tell you everything You would like to know about my father That's why Besides There is someone far more important than him That he wants you to know [24:41] So I'm only going to tell you four things About my father The first thing is that Bob Heaney Was a great sinner And I know he would approve this message Because it's God's own word For all have sinned And come short of the glory of God There is none righteous There is none righteous Not even one And my father was no exception And he would be the first To tell you that Wouldn't he You'd ask him How you doing Bob Very often he would say Much better than I deserve That was no clever ditty Trying to be cute with us It was the truth And he knew it He was a sinner Who deserved to be in hell In the front of his Bible He wrote In his all caps printing That you will Know about Anything Less Than hell Is mercy And he believed that [25:44] With every fiber Of his being You'll never understand Bob Heaney Until you understand This truth about him He was a great sinner Oh not perhaps As the world Counts sin But as God The judge Counts it And after all That's What we are concerned about We do not give an account To men But to Our maker And sin Is the breaking Of his laws Sin is doing What he forbids And not doing What he commands And that includes Not only our outward Actions But sins of the heart Of the mind Of the will Things done And things left Undone One day Jesus was asked What is the greatest Commandment in the law And Jesus responded To love the Lord Your God With all your heart And with all your soul And with all your mind [26:44] And with all your strength This is the greatest Commandment And if that's the Greatest commandment Then not loving God With all your heart Is the greatest sin And that commandment Alone made my father A great sinner 29 years ago Dad wrote his testimony In which he Says Under the close guard Of a loving father And mother I didn't get into A lot of trouble And my life Was outwardly Moral By outwardly moral He simply meant As far as man's eyes Could see For man looks On the outward appearance But God Looks on the heart Where is the love Of your heart He goes on to say During my mid-teen years I became keenly aware That I was a whitewashed Sepulcher Clean and spotless Outwardly But inwardly Full of dead men's bones [27:46] Now that's himself Describing himself With Jesus' language A polished grave On the outside But full of uncleanness And wickedness Within He says The word of God Was convicting me Of my sin And I was fighting it Hoping to finish High school And then have some time For myself Before turning To God This was clear evidence Of a proud And selfish heart Those are his words Not mine Oh how proud He was Thinking more highly Of himself Than Jesus Christ As if Jesus Christ The son of God Was somehow Unworthy of his heart And his life That's proud Oh how selfish He was Loving his own way Wanting more time For me Not wanting to Give himself up To Christ It's no small Wickedness To withhold [28:48] Your heart From the Lord Jesus Who is God And Savior To want more time Without him At the controls Of your heart And life Yes he was so sinful That if he got What he deserved It would be hell Forever Bob Heaney Was a great sinner But secondly I want to tell you That Bob Heaney Had a greater Savior Jesus Christ Is a greater Savior Than Bob Heaney Was a sinner Jesus Christ Is more full of grace Than Bob Heaney Ever was of sin For where sin Abounded God's grace Much more abounded Now when I say That Jesus Christ Saved my father I simply mean That he did all The saving And that my father Didn't contribute Anything To his own Salvation Except the sin That made it So necessary Nothing he ever did Could undo the offense [29:48] Of one of his sins Against an infinitely Holy God No amount of his Good deeds Could pay the price For sin Could buy him Two seconds In heaven The Bible says He saved us Not because of Righteous things That we had done But because of His mercy It is by grace You have been saved Through faith Not of works So that no one Can boast His salvation Was accomplished Entirely By another By Jesus Christ Alone The lover Of his soul For the eternal Son of God Became a man And lived the Perfect life That my father Didn't And couldn't A life of Perfect obedience Which is required To get into heaven And then Jesus Willingly died The death That my father Deserved to die [30:48] For his sins Death under God's infinite Wrath And condemnation The second death Of separation From God Which caused Christ to cry Out from the Cross My God My God Why have you Abandoned me Death As the penalty And punishment For sin For Christ Died for sin Once for all The righteous For the unrighteous To bring us To God Salvation is found In no other name No one else There is no other name Under heaven Given to men By which we must Be saved Eternal life Is in him Outside of him There is only Condemnation For this is the Testimony We have received From God God has given Us eternal Life And this life Is in his Son So that He who has The son Has life But he who Has not The son [31:49] Has not Life And you see My father Did not have The son He had Religion He had Other things But he did Not have The son He did not Have Christ He was refusing Him And so he Lived his First 18 years One breath Away from Hell But one night 64 years ago Jesus Christ Sought and found Him Jesus Christ Opened his Heart so that He would Receive him Jesus Christ Opened his Eyes so that He would see His need His foulness His guilt And he would See how Perfectly Jesus Christ Met all of His needs As a sinner And he Called on The Lord Jesus to Save him And trusted In him To do Just that He tells Us about It in His testimony He was Ten months It was ten Months after [32:49] High school Graduation Remember he's Wanting more Time for Himself And he went To Chicago To visit a High school Friend who Was passing Through the Windy city And before Going to bed That night This friend Saw my Father get Down on His knees And pray And the Friend said To my Father Afterwards How long Have you Been a Christian Bob He said I'm not A Christian I'm not A Christian The question Stuck like An arrow In my Father's Heart As he Laid in Bed In that Quiet Room And God The Holy Spirit Began to Powerfully Deal with Him Convicting Him of His Sinful Neglect Of Jesus Christ The only Savior For Sinners That he Had been Holding Him at Arm's Length The Son of God Who Was So Worthy Of His All And All And In The The We Hours Of The Morning He Confessed [33:49] His Sins To God And Called On The Lord To Save Him And He Often Would Tell Us How He Woke Up That Next Sunrise To An Easter Sunday With New Life In Christ Just As 2000 Years Ago Christ Rose From The Dead To Newness Of Life On That Resurrection Morning So Dad Was Raised To Life From His Spiritual Life To Christ God Was More Than A Word In The Bible Now He Was Real To Him Christ Was His Hope And His Joy And His Trust His Sins Were For Jesus Sake And At Last He Was At Peace With God And From That Moment The Holy Spirit Of God Took Up Residence In His Heart Made Him A New Creature Started The Work Of Transformation Changing Him Giving A New Direction To His Mind And His His Affections And His Will Enabling! [34:50] Him To Live A New Life Because When With Nothing! Good To Say For! He Turned From His Sin And Trusted In What Jesus Christ Has Done For Sinners A Great Business Transaction Took Place All Of His Sins Were Put To Christ's Account And He Atoned For Them On The Cross And All Of Christ's Perfect Obedience Was Put To His Account Making Him Right With God Forever A Glorious Exchange That Happens Whenever Any Sinner Cast His Whole Weight Her Whole Weight Upon What Jesus Has Done For Sinners One Night A Couple Weeks Ago Some Of Us Were Gathered Around His Bed Singing Hymns To Him And I Asked Him Dad What Is Your Only Hope For Entrance Into Heaven He Wasn't Speaking Much But He Said That [35:50] Jesus Christ Has Died For My Sins It Was Still His Great Comfort In Life And In Death To The Very End You See That Resurrection Sunday In Chicago The Old Bob Heaney Died With Christ And A New Bob Heaney Rose With Christ To Newness Of Life Now Some Of You May Not Have Known The Old Bob Heaney So You May Even! [36:18] Be Questioning Whether I'm Being Truthful When I Tell You He Was A Great Sinner You Will Tell Me No Doubt That The Bob Heaney You Knew Was Humble And Unselfish That He Never Knew Anyone Beneath Him He Never Talked Down To Anyone He Was So Unselfish With His Time And His Money And Everything He Had You Might Think That This Is Just The Way He Was Or That This Is Why He's Accepted Into Heaven Today And You Would Be So Wrong On Both Accounts Only The Works Of Christ Got My Father Into Heaven His Perfect Life His Atoning Death And Only The Work Of Christ In His Heart Made My Proud Father Humble And My Selfish Father Unselfish So Here's The Bottom Line About Dad All That Was Bad About Him Was His Fault And All That Was Good About Him Was God's Fault God's [37:19] Work Of Grace In His Heart Because Dad Like A Branch Was Now Attached To The Fruitful Vine Jesus Christ Drawing Sap Of Newness Of Life From Him That Made Him A New Creature Made Him The Man That Most All Of Us Knew And Loved So If You Appreciate Anything About Humility And Unselfishness In My Father You Have God To Thank For That For Making Him Less And Less Like His Old Self And More And More Like Jesus Christ Christ Who So Humbly And Unselfishly Laid Aside The Splendor Of Heaven And Came To This Earth And Became One Of Us Indeed A Man Of Sorrows To Suffer And Die The Damnation That Sinners Deserve That We Might Be Brought To Heaven Right With God [38:19] Forever God That God Humility Grew Out Of His Biblical! Convictions He Knew He Was A Sinner Who Deserved To Be In Hell Forever Who Was Saved In Spite Of Himself By God's Electing Redeeming Regenerating And Preserving Grace And So These First Two Points Together Give Us A True Understanding Of My Father He Was A Great Sinner Who Had An Even Greater Savior The Third Thing I Want To Tell You About Him Is That Bob Heaney Life Was Christ And I Take These Last Two Points From The Text Philippians 121 Where Paul Says! [38:58] For To Me To Live Is Christ And To Die Is Gain Now This Paul Was Once A Blasphemer And A Violent Man He Hated Jesus Christ And His Followers He Did Everything He Could To Stamp Out The Church And The Memory Of Christ From The Earth And One Day He Was On His Way To Persecute Christians In A Foreign Land And Suddenly With A Brilliance Like The Son The Risen Glorified Jesus Christ Met Him Struck Him Blind Knocked Him To The Ground Saved Him Forgave His Sins And Made Him A New Creature In Christ The Old Paul Died A New Paul Began That Day And He Went From Persecuting The Followers Of Christ To Himself Being Persecuted For Preaching Christ And Here He Is Now In His Prison Cell For Christ's Sake Being [39:59] Held For Trial And He's Contemplating The Upcoming Verdict Will It Be Life For Me Or Will It Be Death And He Says Whichever It Is My Great Concern Is To Magnify Christ Whether By Life Or By Death For To Me To Live Is Christ And To Die Is Gain How Would You Sum Up Your Life In Just One Word For To Me Life Is Blank Fill It In What's The One Thing That You're All About Your Work Your Family Your Hobby Your Possessions Your Self What Defines Your Life In One Word Paul Says For To Me Life Is Christ Christ Was Everything To Paul He Was The Center Of All He Did He Was The Son Of His Solar System He [40:59] Lived In Union With Christ He Lived In Communion With Christ He Lived By The Power Of Christ He Lived According To The Rule Of Christ In Scripture He Lived To Know Christ And Make Him Known He Lived Pursuing Greater! [41:13] Likeness To Christ! He Lived Loving Christ Serving Christ Praising Christ He Lived By Faith In Christ He Lived For The Glory Of Christ No Longer Living For Himself But For Him Who Died And Was Raised To Life On His Behalf Christ Was The Ultimate Reason To Live Another Day On This Earth Christ Gave Meaning And Purpose To His Entire Existence Now What Does It Look Like To Live With A Man Whose Life Is Christ Well I Never Lived With The Apostle Paul But I Did Live Most Of My Life Within View Of My Father And I Could Not Miss The Fact That His Was A Christ Permeated Life This Was That New Life That Christ Gave Him A Life In Union And Communion With Him Set Free [42:13] From A Life That Revolved Around The Puny Center Of Self He Now Lived With Christ As The Grand Center Of Everything He Did That Affected Every Aspect Of His Life Christ Was No Longer Some Isolated Compartment Of His Life One Day A Week Christ Christ Now Made A Difference! [42:35] In Everything He Did Take The Bible Christ Is What Made The Word Of God So Precious To My Father It's Why He Daily Read His Bible It's Why He Was Reading Through It Over And Over Throughout His Lifetime Why He Committed So Much Of It To Memory And Meditated! [43:04] His Voice Is Heard His Grace Is Communicated In The Bible Take The Family Christ Drastically Affected His Relationship With My Mother He Sought To Love His Wife How As Christ Loved The Church And Gave Himself Up For Her And So It Was For Better Or For Worse In Sickness And In Health Giving Himself Up For As Christ Did For Him Christ Effected The Way He Raised Us We Learned Early On That Christ Was Our Greatest Need In Life And Our Greatest Need For Eternity And That's Why He Poured The Scriptures Into Us Any Way He Could Because It's The Word Of God Which Is Able To Make Us Wise Unto Salvation Through Faith In Jesus Christ It's Why He Spanked Us Why He Disciplined Us Why He Loved Us And Was So Involved [44:04] In Our Lives Why He Played With Us And Why He Prayed Like Crazy For Us He Wanted To Turn Us Out Of The Road Leading To Destruction Onto Christ The Narrow Road Who Is Himself Life And It Was No Different With You His Grandchildren Neither Was It That's What He Sought For You He Wanted You To Know Christ And Oh How Christ Affected His Church Life Grace Fellowship Church What Was Pastor Bob's Passion Here Well Was It Not That He Wanted Us To Know Christ Whom To Know Is Life Eternal Did He Not Want To See Christ Formed In Us Did He Not Want Us To Make Christ Known To Others For This He Preached For This He Prayed For This He Spoke The Word Of God To Us That In [45:04] All Things Christ May Have The Preem The Central Place In Our Hearts And Lives Christ Is Why He Wanted To Be Here Every Time The Doors Were Open And The Church Was Meeting For Christ Is Especially Present In The Gathered Worshiping Congregations Of His People And He Didn't Want To Miss A Meeting Between Christ And His People It Was One Of The Trials That Came Upon Him As His Health Began To Fail That He Could Not Meet With Us Yes He Loved His Brothers And Sisters Here But He Loved The Presence Of Christ With His People Christ Affected His Attitude! [45:48] Toward Physical! God In My Health Rule Number One He Is My Lord I Am His Servant As His Servant I Yield My Rights To A Healthy Life To Him Well That's Fine On A Day When The Sun Shining And You're Feeling Like A Million Dollars But It's Also The Truth When The Diagnosis Is Not Good From The Doctor I Yield My Rights To Him For How Much! [46:22] I Enjoy Rule Number Two His Purpose Is To Build A Life Message Through Me Therefore I Owe Him The Care Of My Body So He Can Get The Job Done And That's Why He Was Out Beating The Pavement And Fighting The Battle Of The Bulge Christ You See Was At The Very Center Of His Whole View Of Physical! [46:44] Physical! To Serve Him And He Submitted To Christ As To How Much Health He Would Enjoy And For How Long Christ His Life Every Aspect Christ Effected His Work At Bremen Castings He Just Received His 60th Year Plac Most Of Those Years As General Manager Still Serving On The Board Of Directors! [47:14] When He Died He Enjoyed His Work At BCI And He Took Jesus Christ Into The Rough And Tumble Of The Business World And He Sought To Live For Christ There Seeking To Do His Work As Unto The Lord With All Of His Heart Applying Christ's Word To The Workplace Endeavoring To Treat Others As Christ Had Treated Him Befriending Many There And Wanting Them To Know His Savior He Taught Us That Any Workplace Can Be Service! [47:47] For Jesus And Christ Was In His Neighborhood I Should Say Christ Was The Life In His Neighborhood Relationships We Received This Glimpse Of Him Through The Eyes Of A Mother Who Lived Near Him We Didn't Know Him Very Well But He Was A Neighbor That My Boys Would Always Sell Cub Scout Popcorn To He Was Awesome Every Time My Boys Would Come To His Door Each! [48:16] Year He Would Tell Them And He Would Tell Them Of His Days As A Boy Scout Long Ago And Then He Would Lead Them From The Scout! [48:32] Promise I Promise To Do My Best To Do My Duty To God And My Country And Then Moving Into The Word Of God And Ultimately Around To The Truth And The Way And The Life That Is Christ He Would Ask My Boys If They Knew Jesus Christ As Their Lord And Savior I'm So Glad To Have Crossed Paths With Him On Earth And Hope To Get To Know Him Better Someday At The Feet Of Jesus You See For Me To Live Is Christ Even When The Doorbell Rings And It's Kids Selling Popcorn And It Was No Different When He Met With Troubles In Life Share Of Them When Mom Grew Ill He Received It As From Christ Himself The Passage He Held On To For Those Ten Long Years Of Caring For Her Was Psalm 16 5 That Was Read For Us Earlier Lord You [49:32] Have Assigned Me My Portion And My Cup You Have Made My Lot Secure He Realized That It Was Not His To Decide What Got Poured Into! [49:42] His Cup And What Got Put Upon His Plate It Was Rather Lord You Have Assigned Me This And It Helped Him To Know That This Trouble Had Not Come Upon Him By Chance But That Christ Was The One Who Assigned It To Him And So He Received It As Such His New Assignment From The Lord No Longer Here To Preach New Assignment Bob Now You're To Be Here But Folks He Didn't Stop Ministering Did He He Was Just On A Different Assignment And From That Bedside He Also Served The Lord There He Taught Us There Is A Will Of God To Suffer As Well As A Will Of God To Do In The Front Of His Bible He Had Written Your Troubles Have Done Their Work If They Brought You To Jesus And There He Found Comfort And Strength And Peace And Joy And Motivation [50:43] To Go On You See When Your Life Is Christ All Aspects Of Life Are About Him He Is All That Matters And He Is All You Need And Dad Lived Upon Christ And Found Him Sufficient For All That He Had Met With In Life And He Trusted Him For All That He Would Meet With In Death And The Last Thing I Want To Tell You Is That Bob Heaney Death Was Gain Working In Business All Of His Life Dad Knew The Dif Between Gain And Loss And He Understood When Paul Said For Me To Live Is Christ And To Die Is Gain That When Your Life Is Christ Your Death Is Gain Now There Is A Death That Is A Great Loss It's The Death Of All People Who Die Outside Of Jesus Christ Who Die Not Knowing Him As Their Lord And Savior It's The Death Of The One Who Lives For Himself And [51:43] Not For Jesus Christ And That Death Marks The End Of All Of Their Joys And Comforts And Possessions And Peace And The Beginning Of Their Eternal Torments In A Place That Jesus Christ Himself Referred To As Hell As Fire That Is Never Quenched As Everlasting Punishment As The Place Of Outer Darkness And Gnashing Of Teeth It's To Be Forever! [52:12] And Of God Is To Exist Forever Under His Wrath And So For Those Who Die Without Jesus Christ Is Their Lord And Savior It Is Not Gain To Die It Is Anything But Gain It Is Tragic Is Tragic Eternal! [52:28] Lost But For Those Whose Life Is Christ To Die Is Gain Gain That Means That Death Leaves Us Better Off Than When We Were Alive Paul Was Already Living The Blessed Life That Was Christ And Yet He Says I Desire To Depart And To Be With Christ Which Is Better By Far A Triple Comparative Better By Far Far Better Than Living For Christ Here Is To Live With Christ There And That's What Makes It Gain To Die Is To Be With The Lord And That's Why Bob Heaney Death Was Gain It's Gain Yes Because It Was The End Of His Battle With Leukemia It Was Gain Yes Because It Was The End Of His Battle With Sin It And [53:54] The Face That Was Spit Upon For Him For You Will Fill Me With Joy In Your Presence And At Your Right Hand Our Pleasures Forevermore And That's Why Our Father Was Eager To Die I've Never Seen Someone Die Before My Mother And April And My Father Last Week But Dad Was Eager To Die And We Had To Let Him Go But The Thing That Made Him Eager Was That He Was Longing To Be With His Savior It's Just That Simple He Loved Pilgrim's Progress That Allegory Of The Christian Life Written By John Bunyan He Was On His 30th Read Since 1980 As He Clicked It Off In The Front Page Holding The Book Together With Duct Tape Almost Once A Year He Made His Way Through [54:54] That For The Last 30 Some Years And At The Point Where Christian Finally Arrives Home At The Celestial City Of Heaven He Has Down In The Margin These Words If If Jesus Be So Sweet To Faith Below What Must He Be To Sight Above We Must Die To Know And Last Sunday Morning At 2 39 He Took His Last Breath And What He Experienced Next Made His Death Gain Even Better By Far For To Be Absent From The Body Is To Be Present With The Lord Can I Ask You If You Died Today Would Your Death Be Gain Or Loss Would You Be Better By Far Than You Are Right Now For [55:55] What Does It Profit A Man To Gain The Whole World And Yet To Lose His Own Soul And What Will A Man Give In Exchange For His Soul For The Trifles That Men Value More Than Christ And Then Eternity With Him So The Lord Is Given And The Lord Has Taken Away Blessed Be The Name Of The Lord And In Taking The Gift! [56:20] The That He Had Given Us God Now Commands Three Things Of Us Remember This One Who Spoke The Word Of God To You Remember What He Said And How He Lived Secondly Consider The Outcome Of His Way Of Life The End Result Where It Brought Him To A Death That Is Gain That Something Far Better Than Life Here And Thirdly It Now Remains For You And Me To Imitate His Faith To Imitate His Faith His Faith In Christ He Was The Object Of His Faith The Author And Perfecter Of His Faith Imitate His Faith That Looks Away From Anything In Self And Hangs All Your Hope For Heavens Upon Christ And What He Has Done For Poor Sinners Imitate His Faith That Finds In Jesus Christ Everything You Need For Life And Godliness Faith That Takes [57:21] Christ At His Word Faith That Lives For Christ In All Aspects Of Life In Marriage And Family And Work And Worship And Health Faith That Makes Christ The Very Very Center Of Our Least Endeavor Imitate His Faith That's An Imperative That's A Command Of God That Gets My Attention When God Gives A Gift It Comes With Responsibility! [57:50] And It's No Different With This Gift Were You Given To Know This Servant Of His Then To Whom Much Is Given Much Will Be Required God Did Not Put This Man Among Us That We Might Just Sit Back And Admire Him For The Life That He Lived Far Be It No He Put Him Among Us That We Might Imitate Him In So Far As He Imitated Jesus Christ His Savior Brothers And Sisters That's Why God Made Him Our Father Grandchildren That's Why God Made Him Your Grandpa It's Why God Made Him Your Pastor Why God Made Him Your Friend Your Work Associate Your Neighbor It's Why We Were Blessed To Know Him That [58:51] We Might Imitate His Faith And His Life That Was Christ And So Come To That Same Blessed Outcome Of A Death That Is Gain It's A It was A Blessed Thing To Know Him But It's Also A Sobering Thing To Have Known Him For This Reason That We Will All Have To Give An Account To God For What We Have Done With The Example Of This One He Gave To Us We'll Have To Answer For What We Did With The Word Of God That He Spoke To Us What We Did With The Gospel Of Jesus Christ And If We Did Not Imitate His Faith In Christ Then We Will Wish We Had Never Met Him Had Never Known Him For It Will Only Increase Our Guilt And Condemnation To Have Known And Heard The Gospel Through Him But Not To Have Imitated His Faith In The Only Savior Jesus [59:51] Christ Oh But There's Great Encouragement Attached To This Challenge And It's This That That Jesus Christ Is The Same Yesterday Today And Forever This Means That If You Trust In This Jesus Christ He Will Be Everything To You Today That He Was To Bob He Yesterday And To Any Leader That Taught You The Word Of God Before That And He Will Be That To You Forever And Ever Because He's The Same Yesterday Today And Forever The Very Same Resources In Christ Are Available To You As As Were Available To Pastor Bob You Know He Was No Different Than Us I Want To Say That Again He Was No Different From Us He Lived Out Of The Same Cupboard That You And I Have The Fullness Jesus Is The Same Today That He Was Yesterday Jesus [60:51] Is No Less Rich In Mercy And Help For Us Than He Was For Him Jesus Christ Is Just As Willing And Able To Save You As He He Was Bob He When He Called Upon Him For Mercy 64 Years Ago And He Is Just As Faithful And Powerful To Help You In Your Troubles As He Was My Father In His Here Is The Enabling Power For Imitating A Life That Breathes Christ In Every Part It's The Lord Jesus Himself!
